Didn't Hughes say he wanted to be under the cap without putting Price on LTIR? I am not an expert on Cap rules but I was under the impression adding to the cap at this time right before training camp makes little sense. For a 3rd?

I question the timing of asset managment thats all, I prefer to wait out and see how many teams are in trouble. All good, not like what we think means anything at the end of the day anyways
After last year, I think Hughes realizes sometimes circumstances (like last years multiple injuries) can change a team’s plans pretty quickly, sometimes it’s better to take the deal you have, rather than wait for the deal that may never materialize.

Especially when you’re dealing with an asset that’s not in high demand.

In the next 2 years 19 players will be ufa, or rfa at some point, so the potential to lose a lot of the dead/meddling weight and to change.

I'm of the belief that either via trade, or free agency Montreal will go for someone this off season.

FA only costs cap and they could overpay a fairly good player to come here and be part of an (hopefully) up and coming team.
Fair enough but I would temper that optimism with the fact that most of the guys that expire after this season are about at league minimum.
Adding to the fact that we'll need to give those we want to keep a raise (namely Barron, Xhekaj, Monty), I don't see us being in a position to splurge on FA, unless we start shedding serious cap.
After the 24-25 season we'll be rid of the big 4 (Dvo, Armia, Savard and Allen) for a more significant amount of cap but this time with Ghule/Slaf needing to be reupped.

I'm hoping it pays off and we're able to add talent along the way but we're not exactly going at breakneck pace. The patient approach is probably safer than skipping steps but I'd like us to push the pace a little if warranted.
Say some players show promise after camp, I'd like us to dump a guy with one of the numerous picks we've accumulated recently. There's still way too much deadweight lying aroung the lineup.

I’m down to give Pearson a chance but we need to figure out a way to get rid of Armia.

I'll assume that Hughes is paying 1.4 for a third because this year there's no option to pay 7 million for a first.

That's unfortunate, but those are the dealt cards.

It's nice to get a 3rd round pick. But not sure it will be worth it if it means Pearson takes away ice time from Ylonen...

No way to get rid of Armia except giving up assets or finding a bad GM like Grier that wants him. But not sure even the bad GM's want Armia.

They wouldn't send Slaf down would they?

I'm not saying it would be a bad move, just one that would surprise me. Forward group is awfully jammed right now. Maybe they want all the kids to play together down in Laval.

Of course they won't.

They love their Slaf.

I wouldn't be against that.

WE'll see.....There was no way to get rid of Hoffman excepts giving up asset and we just got a 3rd for him on top of the 2nd and 3rd round pick......

There are multiple ways the Habs can get under the Cap before putting Price on LTIR, below is one of those ways (and probably a way they won’t lose any players).

Currently they are over the Cap by $6,177,916 million with 27 players (as per capfriendly).

They could:

Send Armia to Laval - saving $1,150,000
Send Pearson to Laval - saving $1,150,000
Send Reinbacher to Laval or Europe - saving $950,00
Send Wideman to Laval - saving $762,500

They can then do two paper transactions:

Harris to Laval - saving $1,150,000
RHP to Laval - saving $1,100,000

This puts them $84,548 below the cap. They could then put Price on LTIR and bring Harris and RHP back up. If Dvorak is still injured they could bring Pearson or Armia back up.

Let’s not forget that Bergevin also gave away our 2024 2nd round draft pick during the Dvorak trade. As if a 1st round pick wasn’t enough.

So any early round draft pick trying to recoup that loss is a welcomed addition.

We'll see...

But if he isn't a lock for a top 9 spot by virtue of his play, I wouldn't be surprised to see him start in Laval.

(personally, if he isn't playing well enough to start the year next to Dach or Suzuki, and be a regular on the pp, I think I'd rather see him play top line minutes in Laval).

The rationale to keep him in Montreal last year would be tough to apply for a 2nd season one would think.

You'd think the locks are
Suzuki Dach Dvorak Evans
CC Monahan Newhook Anderson

That leaves (barring injury) Slaf, Armia, Pearson, Gally, Ylonen, RHP and Pez all fighting for the 4 (+1 13th fwd) remaining winger spots up front.

If he's not solidly top 2 from those 7, I'd think Laval is a better spot than 4th line duties...

That's unfortunate, but those are the dealt cards.
Still, for the draft in 2025, Montreal now has two 1st round picks (MTL + CAL), two 2nd round picks (MTL + PIT), two 3rd round picks (MTL + VAN) and two 4th round picks (MTL + BOS).

That's two years to evaluate your prospects before, perhaps, using all that ammunition for a trade?

The CAL pick could be higher than we think, as the PIT and BOS picks, with those two ageing teams perhaps out of the playoff picture?

I could see Montreal determining that they need a top-6 winger, plus a 2nd pairing D -- and using the trade capital, along with a good player from a position of strength, perhaps on LD, to land one ,or both of these missing pieces.

For the summer, it's actually pretty amazing asset management

Out:
Hoff & Pitlick (5.6M cap charge)

In:
2nd, 3rd, 4th, Legare
Lindstrom & Pearson (4.2M cap charge)
2.3M dead cap for 2 years

Took on 1.3M in cap this season & 2.3M next while adding 3 picks and a prospect and two roster players that fit our immediate needs far better.

Pretty schrewd

Fowler, Engstrom, and Harris are three recent 3rds.

Some have very short memories lol

Exactly. Remember when Hughes said they're acquiring assets so they can be able to afford overpaying on someone in a trade to ensure they get him.

2025 seems like the year they plan to start being buyers. They have 2 x 1st, 2 x 2nd, 2 x 3rd & 2 x 4th.
All this thread for THIS. People should stop posting on this thread TBH because YOU understand.
