That's not how it works.

In baseball, are the worst players the guys who suck up major league money while performing below replacement level? Or is it the AAAA guy who can't hit ML pitching but doesn't get paid to do so?

Tanner Glass is getting paid 1.45 million to make a negative impact on the ice. He sucked with AV, he sucked in WPG, and he sucked with Pittsburgh. He's one of the worst consistent players in the league.

I'll complain about his negative impact on the ice when we actually see it.

That is what I thought but it was not just Glass for Dorsett.

It turned out to be Glass plus a 3rd round pick for Dorsett.

This. Glass replaces Dorsett (just check stats), plus we reaped a 3rd round pick in a decent draft that got us a guy who should be a regular 3rd line player in about 2 years... you make that trade every day, especially when it's centered around a REPLACEABLE 4th liner. Have to say, I'm glad the trade was made. Rangers Brass has more than necessary made up for the lack of a 1st round pick this year... signing 3 sought-after College UFA's, followed by good picks in the 2nd and 3rd round this year, it makes the MSL trade sting that much less.

It was never about cap relief. That was HF's belief, and they were all wrong.

On top of that, I'd trust AV on this signing. I have firm belief that AV thinks Bylsma misplayed Glass. Quite frankly, Bylsma was TERRIBLE at dealing with depth in PIT, so it does not surprise me.

Frustrating to think that NYR lost a good player because they didn't "say the right thing." Ugh. What a waste.

On the plus side, everyone thought Carcillo would be a waste, just like they do with Glass now, so there's a chance that he plays pleasantly well for his role.

If last year impressed anything on me, it's that HF doesn't know what its talking about. It's reactionary, almost completely.

1. I'd rather NYR be honest about it... you lie to the guy, you run the risk of keeping the guy around who becomes ticked off at his team, then demands a trade... sounds like Vancouver, I do not want that.

2. Exactly. Give Glass a chance to impress. nobody was happy with Carcillo, yet the guy was a hero against the Flyers. AV is a GREAT coach, and Glass is a HUGE locker room guy (I'm sure AV acknowledges the loss of leadership in Boyle, therefore wanted to replace that, as well as the statistics that boyle brought)... In short, Glass is everything Boyle was... whether or not that translates to solid on-ice performance, we will have to wait and see...

3. I wonder why i follow this site so often sometimes, lol... everyone here is always on a cliff :P

Maybe AV wanted one of the guys he trusted in the locker room on the team.

Not sure why everyone is having such a go at Glass when the team's given similar deals to Asham, Rupp, Brashear, Boogaard over the years.

Wow. Set the bar low.

When I think of bad players that we've signed in the last few years I think of Taylor Pyatt. Glass might not be a great player but he can fight okay and he can kill penalties and once in a while he'll throw a hit that might mean something.

I think sometimes people exaggerate a lot of **** and a lot right now is because they're not happy because Stralman or Boyle didn't come back. I suppose we could have lied to Brian Boyle and told him next year he'd be on a scoring line. He wanted something more than the Rangers could give him and it wasn't just $. He wanted the opportunity to show that he was more than a 4th line player and to be honest Brian Boyle can't set up his line mates enough--his playmaking has always sucked and he wasn't going on the wing with Martin St. Louis.

Because Asham, Rupp, Brashear and Boogaard were all awful players who didn't contribute to the team's success.

We made it to the SCF. You would've thought Slats figured out what to do. He hasn't.

Why do people keep putting Glass in the same bin as those players?

Glass isn't a goon. He played 12 minutes a game last year, killed penalties. Shot blocker.

He is not a goon. Just isn't.

He has the ability to kill penalties poorly, sure.

My argument was neither about Tanner Glass nor baseball, and I think I don't even get what you're saying.

1. I don't mean lie per se, just tell him he'll be given a chance and then give it to him, as you would with any player. I highly doubt that AV really wouldn't play Boyle on the third line if he came into camp and played so well that he unquestionably earned that spot. I mean, there is going to be a vacancy on 3rd line LW, I'm sure the team would rather have Boyle there for 2M than some other options if he were truly capable of it.

2. That's my thinking as well. Yes, he's been underwhelming on other teams by many metrics. So was Stralman before the right coach got his hands on him. So was Prust. So were many players who are now fairly useful at their roles. Sometimes a change of locations coincides with a change of coach and a maturation period and it all comes together. Is it very likely? Not really. Is it impossible? Not at all.

3. Seriously. I love seeing the very same people that mocked last year's team so mercilessly now mock this team with the same amount of confidence.

This is a completely false dichotomy. Just because we signed Glass to replace Dorsett doesn't mean it was the only option we had available. You only need to look back to the Pittsburgh series, where our 4th line skated circles around their 4th line, and Tanner Glass was a big reason why. There are plenty other forwards that arent Tanner Glass on the UFA market.

Granted AV has been great with the personnel so far, but he showed the same weakness of overplaying Glass in Vancouver as Bylsma did. We will see how the signing ends up working out, but they certainly could have gotten him for less term or less cap hit, if not both.

Yea, but why trade Dorsett if you're spending the money on glass?

Slats want someone that can fight. Dorsett couldn't, and of all players on our team last year I think Dorsett actually was the most dissapointing. I mean, everyone played well, so its setting the bar kind of high. But still.

Because we let a better player in Dorsett go to sign him? That's why I'm pissed. I was fine with the DD trade, until I saw that we went and spent that money on this trash.

Anyone defending this trade has not seen Glass play in the past year. He is quite possibly the worst "regular" forward in the NHL.

Oh really? I must have misunderstood when Glen Sather said he specifically traded Dorsett to make cap room.

With the 2014-15 cap set at $69 million -- it was $64.3 million last season, and estimates had been as high as $71 million for this season -- Sather said he had to trade Derek Dorsett and his $1.63-million cap hit to Vancouver on Friday "to give us some relief . . . we had to make some room.''

Well Dorsett for Iverson+Glass isn't a terrible deal.

The issue I have is the term. Not really signing him or even the $1.45M salary.

Look at McClement, 1 year $1M. Goc 1 year $1.2M.

Why 3 years for Glass?

I would to add that Glass has had his tires pumped by Bylsma for years. Expect him to whine if he doesn't get enough ice time, he seems to think he plays an important role. Expect him to ask for pk time and to play on the top line when up by a goal or 2.

Good luck

He can take it up with Gernander in Hartford before too long.

So dorsett is let go to make room just to sign this clown?

Surely there's a planned trade where glass gets traded to said team + whatever else in exchange for a top 6 forward.
