The number of ELC contracts they’ll be adding over the next several years should get us through the next three years of Skinner’s deal without an issue. It’s the 26-27 season that it might be something to work around. Tuch’s ridiculous value deal runs out and he will be 30…a leader and key piece in the middle of the window. it will test their desire to give term and dollars through a players 30s because they’re going to want to keep him.
They have 20 million coming off the books next year on guys they probably don’t want to keep and can be replaced by ELC guys or cheaper bottom six contracts (Okposo, Girgensons, E Johnson, Olofsson, Comrie, Lyubushkin and Jost is the list of pending UFAs). I think every one of them can be replaced by a younger and/or cheaper option and people wouldn’t complain. One of the reasons to move on from Joker, on top of his play and lack of fit, is that he’s an RFA with arbitration rights. They shouldn’t sign him long term and he could be replaced by a middling UFA on a short term deal. His value in trade is now. Gets (at least) another 2.5 off next year too. Bryson you don’t qualify if you can’t move him which is another 1.85. We’re at around 24 million off the books in guys that can/should go.
That number takes care of the Power raise, Dahlin raise and a Mittelstadt and Krebs raise without even thinking about the cap going up. Savoie and Kulich will be here by then making little.
The next year Quinn and Peterka get new deals but you have complete control over it. If they earn long term big deals…great. If they get bridged…great. You have a dozen forwards who can replace them three years later if they need to. Levi needs a deal too…but you have even more control over that one as he can’t even be offer sheeted. Also…the seventh highest paid goalie in the league right now makes 6…so he’s not going to be getting Dahlin/Power money anyway. Benson’s ELC will be in the league then too. Rosen and Ostlund? Is there room?
Then it’s 26-27. As long as both Savoie and Kulich don’t become full time NHLers this season…they won’t both have new contracts kicking in that year. If one does make the league then they’ll be getting a raise. If neither does you get through the Skinner deal pretty easily I think. But you might end up trying to break in three rookie skill forwards every season if you don’t spread this out some.
