Player Discussion Leo Carlsson

Digging through his advanced stats, discovered something interesting.

His 5v5 xGF dropped from 33 last season to 21 this season. However, his 5v5 xGA also dropped from 33 to 25.

Fantilli's 5v5 xGA is 34 (worse than last year).
Bedard's is almost 40.
Celebrini's is at 30.

I think Leo has been one of the biggest targets, and victims, of Cronin's emphasis on defense.

What was the story from the offseason? I forget exactly what it was, but wasn’t it something like Verbeek told him to work out in Sweden and put on “x” number of pounds, and Leo basically said no thanks not necessary?

Maybe he needs to take his conditioning a little more seriously this time around.

It’s also important to note that, by at least what I remember, he was expected to take longer than Bedard/Fantilli/Celebrini. I seem to remember a lot of pundits saying he should continue to develop in the SHL. I agree strength and conditioning is an issue for him, but I’m hoping as he matures he recognizes that more if he hasn’t already.

I think it was a Swedish article that I, amongst others, paraphrased, just happening to know some Swedish (despite being Finnish).

Edit: found it, it's a Swedish article from August where Leo says that Anaheim wanted him to put on 8kg (~17.5lbs) of muscle mass in the summer, but he says he's happy with having gained 4kg and that "you can't listen to everything the club says".

Sure doesn’t sound like something Leo would say with his personality. You see a lot of stuff taken in a different context in translated articles.

He strikes me more of a “i will absolutely do whatever it takes, here for the team” type of person.

He literally says in his mother tongue (not translated, I read Swedish) that he thought Anaheim's directive for him was going to be very tough to fulfil and that he's satisfied with having done as much as he did, also adding that "you can't listen to everything the club says" (effectively meaning that he thinks he's given a direction but how far he goes in that direction is his own prerogative).

I don't know how much we can read into that because it could simply be that Verbeek and Cronin gave him an exaggerated goal to work towards on purpose, because let's face it putting on almost 10kg of muscle mass in 3-4 months is incredibly hard even for young athletes, but it definitely reads as though he's going "I'll do what comes easy and that's that". In the way a young, inexperienced athlete who doesn't realize just how much work it takes to get to the top level would treat the NHL.

It was from a Finnish article, I remember it also. It was posted in this thread around page 63 but it looks like it's been removed. You can see @Static comment about the article but there's no article there... Hmmm, it's a conspiracy.

Edit: apparently I got the language wrong, lol
Well then it’s absolutely on him. Sounds like a euro ego non team player there. How the f do you dismiss that request from
Your Gm? He could’ve just said he would try and leave it at that. So big shot is being humbled now and paying karma tax.

The request was absurd. Its not realistic to put on 10kg of muscle in that time

Then you say you will try and at least will put on something and leave it at that. You don’t just flat out hard say no without context “ 10kg might be to much but I’ll definitely get stronger “ is the correct middle ground there. Especially when asked to by your gm

Do we know what he said to them? All we have is a quote that isn't at all communication with the team.

The issue here is the disconnect which occured because the team clearly didn't get buy in before they sent him off. That's all on the Ducks staff

To be honest, that's probably the communication Leo had with Beeker and Cronin internally. Never have they once publicly voiced dissatisfaction with Leo's training nor has Cronin ever said anything even hinting at that. It might be that he just answered the sports writer with what he had been told verbatim, knowing full well that not even the team intended him to hit the targets just to work towards them.

Ok, I’ll buy that/being partially/mis quoted could also be the case. I really hope the article wasn’t genuine

Regardless of how reasonable you think Pat’s request was, he’s gotta get stronger and faster. It’s definitely holding him back this year, among other things. Fitness is his first priority imo

despite making some questionable passes this year, I’m not worried about his decision-making at all. He’s an extraordinarily sharp player.

8 kg of musle during the summer is perhaps possible only with PED's, and even then might be a complete stretch.

Him gaining 4 kg is pretty good already.

Completely non-controversial topic and the interview itself.

Euro ego non team player is hilarious, I will use that in the future.

I listened to the interview (I speak Swedish). It's a nothingburger.

The team wanted X, he only managed Y, and that he has to listen to his body as well—which is a good thing.
This also puts some (more) blame to Verbeek for rushing him without need. He xlcoukd have been better off staying in Sweden for a year. NHL season even with a weird "i'll sit you often" plan is much more draining than the SHL and I could imagine the exhaustion just stacks up over time and into the offseason
