The 2020 4th rounder only comes in to play if FOLEY does NOT sign with the Blues by 2019. He would have been a FA with the Jets and with our winger depth likely would have looked elsewhere IMO. This trade is basically a late 2018 1st rounder for Stasny. I like it

I don't agree with the doubts about Foley signing here. He is not comparable to Suess in situation. I expected him to be signed as soon as his NCAA season is over. A full year + before he is UFA eligible.

It still comes to the same in the end though. I expect Blues to sign him.

I love Paul being added, chevy reacted to losing out of Bassard very well. Good job chevy!

Bring on the playoffs baby!

I feel like we gave up less than we would have for Brassard as well and likely got an equally good option. Who is actually better on the dot and probably a better defensive guy as well.

The only issue is Foley would have been hard up to make this team in a big role. Any winger prospect is going to have a tough time. We still have Vesalainen, Petan, Dano, Lemieux... Appleton may even have to switch to the wing to make this team.

Brassard has another year though.it depends on the prospect involved in that trade

Should look real good centering the 2nd or 3rd lines

Bravo Chevy with hopefully proven results to back it up
Unlike a Jiri Tylusti or whatever his last name was.

Love to see in inserted into tomorrow nights line up!

Superb!

The first rounder will be a 25 or later pick not monumental

Foley, didn’t have room for him really anyways!

I wonder how the Jets sandbagging Laine conspiracy theory crowd will reconcile this move?
Give it a rest, will ya? You are the one who keeps talking about sandbagging and conspiracy theories. There is no conspiracy. We can discuss this matter again if you want to, but I'd rather change focus to the topic instead, and it is pretty clear now that the Jets are for real this year. They are making a big push for the cup and they have the pieces to do it.

No kidding, I am so **** ing stoked about this! Right out of the blue (or Blues!). I did not expect something this big this late in the day. I didn't think anything was really left to go for, let alone something so perfectly fitting our needs. I hope the chemistry works and then I hope he loves Winnipeg and stays.

Welcome to Winnipeg Paul! :banana::banana::highclap::highclap:

Very little chance he will accept a contract we could afford, I think. More than none, but still not much.

LW is the deepest position for the Jets, but Winnipeg will need to make moves with players, as they did today.

He could, imo, have made a key contribution on the bottom of the roster in a year or two, but to do that some player movement would have had to happen.

Personally I would have kept Lemieux over Foley if it was a simple choice. I believe Lemieux is a better player and prospect but nice to have 2 similar very good prospects to use to your advantage.

One of the complaints was that the Jets were not maximizing Laine's potential, as he needs to be played with a playmaking center.

Laine: meet Stastny.

If anything, the Jets have now dug themselves a cap hole and chucked the theory into it, as I think the Ehlers - Stastny - Laine line will be absolutely deadly. I can see Laine easily breaking the 40G mark lined up with one of the top playmaking centers in the league.

That's our "third line". I seriously think you could roll any of the top 3 lines as your first in terms of TOI, depending on how they're matched up at home or on the road. This will be a very difficult problem for opposing coaches/teams.

Love it.

Yes, but at 20 YO he doesn't need to play in the NHL next year and a lot can happen in a year and a half. I can't say how he would see the situation of course. But we would have been the only team that could sign him this year.

Yeah I'm not sure affordability will be there considering other things. A lot of what we decide will hinge on performance.

Chevy will have options in the off-season if he is willing to take some tough steps to free up cap space. These things are never made impossible by the cap. Only that they require moving major parts of the roster.

Depending on results with PS he might decide it is worth the cost.

As we saw today, there is always the possibility of trades. Much rather have him for now and then see what makes sense for the big picture.

Spectacularly built roster really, nothing goes perfectly but factoring in the challenges Winnipeg has, the future looks as good as it could be I believe.

The other thing to consider is Winnipeg may certainly now be able to emulate " The Chicago Way", borrowing from Sean Connery.

Chicago ( and other teams ) were able to mange cap pressure by being an attractive option for minimum cost free agents from Europe. Having a team as good as the Jets and being able to say offer a realistic chance to play could influence decisions like that. That would allow Chevy to trade a big contract player, get future assets , save money, and get a low cost good player to slot in. Something to consider.

In all likelyhood Stastny would need to take a discount to play here. If we see some success bringing him back will likely be something both parties will be interested in.

Also the whole Chevy gets no credit for scouting. Just a couple of weeks ago Hawerchuk specifically addressed his involvement on the drafting of Scheifele.

He said it was very very minor, that the Jets had made their minds up and wanted his opinion on Mark. The comment he made was, are we missing something because we love him.

Also a couple of years ago Cheveldayoff was on the road fro 20 days in February .... doing what? Holiday? No. Scouting. He developed as a scout and has a significant role in that, but he should not get credit according to some.

Love the trade and I really like Foley but he was behind Lemieux so the Jets astute scouting turned a third into a real piece that enabled a major trade.

Every GM gets judged according to draft success or failure. That is always a large part of the assessment - except if it doesn't happen to support your narrative or bias.
