I feel like we needed to do both (Center and D) or nothing. Look at the Lightning now. I don't think we did enough to win it all. Morrow is what he is, but he doesn't help for a cup run. If we are using Joe Morrow in the playoffs, we are in bad shape.

So we put our toe in the water, but didn't jump all the way in on a cup run. And we now have given up our #1 pick and a decent prospect. Oh well. This would have made more sense to me if we would have done something significant on D as well.

Hopefully, the Stastny move will enable us to get past the first round and earn some significant playoff experience this year. That would be a huge benefit as well - getting past the first round and gaining that post season experience.

But I admire Chevy for making a move and the organization for being willing to try. It is a pretty significant trade/gamble. If we can somehow re-sign Stastny, then it will have been worth it anyway to bring this year's momentum into next year.

I don't know about that Florida ?? We're hugely strong on right side defence and IMO -- second to none in the NHL--with Buff, Trouba and Myers ( great set)

On the left we have Morrissey, Kulikov, and Enstrom --very very solid--I really don't think many of the top teams have any better defence that we do. We also have a backup in Chiarot on the left D side, and I thought he's been very solid his last 4-5 games, and needed for the bigger, tougher teams.

What else could we really do here ?? we're "very solid" and great goaltending as well.

Great White North eh...
A long playoff run is a battle of attrition. For all teams. Just because TB looks stacked doesn't automatically make them the next champion. It's such a long road with all sorts of bumps in it. Injuries can quickly derail any teams hopes for a cup. And in the first round there's always an amazing upset and a dark horse that comes out of nowhere.

We're already one of the top 5 teams in the league. I'm just glad that Chevy didn't stand pat, made some moves that make us a better team going into the playoffs. If we win the cup no one will care about Foley or the 1st pick. Even if we make it to the SC finals or the conference finals this trade will be viewed as a good one. The only way it won't would be a first round exit. But you can't do nothing because of fear of losing. You have to plan for success.

You just knew Chevy was going to get knocked for giving up a first. It's a good move, this org can absorb the loss of a late round first at this stage, especially in a weak draft. The emergence of a guy like Roslovic makes it so much easier and there are a number of others knocking on the door. A blip on the radar for the long term future of the team and a huge boost in the interim.
Absolutely. Great post

Not sure why people are now stating we didn't do enough. Given the roster we have there wasn't much too do to begin with, adding pieces just for the sake of adding pieces isn't necessarily a good thing. We really only had one semi hole at C and we filled it with an impact player that looks to be a good fit in the system and in the room.

Sometimes you can add too much or subtract too much and that can cause issues with team cohesion. There is no guarantee any deadline deal works out, heck Tampa could get eliminated by the Leafs in the first round for all we know. I like the approach of only really adding one marquee piece, it makes slotting him in fairly easy and not all that disruptive.

But I was also quite fine with doing nothing today.

You do know some players Pittsburgh used in the playoffs right? Deep depth and can skate and move the puck. Yes he has faults but if he's the worst player and you have a very strong group, there is no reason you can't win. As has been proven.

I like Toby's game of late, but I don't think he will withstand the rigors of the stretch run and the playoffs. He gets keyed in on and will get wrecked like a pinata, just like a couple of years ago. Chiarot has been decent in some games, but horribad in others. He is the weak link. That's why I would have liked to see something more significant on D.

But I have to give Chevy credit for pulling this off on deadline day. We are definitely a better team than a day ago. If we actually can re-sign Stastny, then this will be well worth it even if we don't get anywhere this year. Bank the experience, and carry the strong season into next year.

great deal for WPG. Stastny isnt the fastest guy but he is a really good play maker and has played with elite snipers in the past. going to look forward to him feed Laine on numerous one-timers. He is a sure-fire upgrade on the 3rd scoring line. having 3 top 6 Cs bode well with what is about to be a very tough playoff run

Chevy never shows his cards...... I'm beginning to love that man.
Yep you are not alone. The jets as a team have really turned 180 on me, last season i was so dissapointed. The penalties the lousy pp the injuries the goaltending the play structure, it was a team i didnt truly want to call my own but this season they have been redeeming that sour first impression and im even proud to say that i am now indeed a jets fan.
A easy thing to say perhaps now that things are going well so i dont compare to true longtime fans who have been on the journey thru better or worse altho one day i miht belong to that group aswell as when i actually become a fan its for life. And this season has given me enough reason for just that.

Go JETS Go!

Ahh we finally decided to part with a 1st and go for it. I guess it took us being 700 points over the playoff line for old slow poke to feel comfortable with it.

Love the trade...stasny knows how to play with tarasenko now he can set up Laine.

I agree with you here--Toby has been playing great lately --let's hope he can withstand a long tough playoff run -- that be great !!! -- we need him.

Said this for a few years now, when Lowry is on the fourth line we can be contenders. Finally for the first time in Jets 2.0 we have three legit centres and three legit lines.

Morrow is just depth.

We didn't have to jump in to the extent that other teams needed to.... Who has a better D than the Jets? Morrissey, Trouba, Buff, Enstrom, Myers, Kulikov, Chariot, Poolman, now Morrow???

Other teams after their moves STILL don't have a D corps like that.

I don't even want to talk about forwards. We have an embarrassment of riches up front as well.

I don't even know if we NEEDED to make any moves, but I'm glad we made the Stasny move..

I'm curious who we could have found that would push any of our EXISTING D down the depth chart?

I like both trades, Stats will be perfect between Laine and Ehlers (hopefully) and putting Lowry down on the fourth is bets way to use him. Copp-Lowry-Armia/Tanev, that is one hell of a fourth line, it is like Kruger-Frolik.
I have np giving up a first this year, and the sunk cost sending Stanley instead of the first would be even worse (don´t think blues wanted him anyway).
And suck on it GMGM, now you gave up a retantion spot for Brassard for no reason, you will regret it next season when Vegas will be worse (history tells us this, but maybe this time I´m wrong)

Thats funny because I connected the dots yesterday. Even said the Blues needed to retain 50%

Yeah, we were chewing the fat with Blues fans on the trade forum over Stastny. Funny thing is, both fan groups agreed around the parameters for the trade (we were pretty close to the actual deal).

I told them I would call Chevy with the deets once my cell phone was charged! :D

Chevy never shows his cards...... I'm beginning to love that man.

Great interview by Chevy. The most he's ever said in an interview I believe.

Appears the conversation with Stastny began days ago. Once player Paul approved the deal, GM Paul walked away from the conversation on Brassard & Plekanic. Chevy took the time to note he had heard the complaints that he had missed the boat.

Appears he got the last laugh, getting the best player of the three.
