Only time will tell with this team but there’s a lot of positives going for them right now. We’ll see how November goes!
Totally agree. November will tell us how this team shapes up against the rest of the league going into December and the Christmas break. Absolutely love the great start we got and putting themselves in a very good position up to this point..

I really enjoyed watching him wind up for his 1 timers at the blue line. Same with Ruchard Jackman, who I think played with Jumbo Joe. Was at least around the same time.
He did, but when he scored 33 in 97-98, we were mostly rookies and had a rough year. That's an impressive feat

Bryce maybe heating up. 6 points in the last four including at least a point in each.

Brodie might be our most offensive defenseman after Arttu. I need more viewings to decide how good he is on the defensive side, but quite impressed at his offensive instincts.

Still waiting for that elusive "Goal scored by BMB assisted by BMB" sorta moment

Karki is absolutely unreal with that one timer and I did not expect this kind of output. His shot is NHL level for sure and should be good for 30 plus even with a World Jr hiatus.

Baby BMB clearly has offensive instincts but his defensive game needs alot of work imo. As he is a former forward those offensive instincts look enticing.

If Karki and as a long shot Gibson get World Jr invites do we sign Gillen too? I would assume Solomon would be 7th D if Karki is gone and 6th if Gibby gets the call too, kinda lucky Russia doesn't have a team or KK gone too. We have only signed 3 from 2023 draft, wonder if Gillen or possibly Smith sign?

I'm thinking Solomon and Evans would just slide into the lineup as regulars for the WJC if Karki and Gibson are out

If those two defensemen are gone, we'd be down to 5 defensemen.
Kudravtsev
Carlisle
Virgilio
Brodie
Evans

I think you definitely call Solomon up in that situation. Probably just run with the 6. If there is an injury/suspension not sure if they would look at signing another player, or maybe there is a forward that they could put back there for spot duty as needed.

That being said, I would love to see Gillen signed.

I could see them just running with the 6 as it is only 6 games they'd be running with them for (barring an early exit for Finland or Canada)

It's more than that, probably another 3 games before Christmas. Last year they announced the team Dec 12 and the team practiced together Dec 14-18 plus a couple exhibition games before Christmas.

I suspect players will miss the following games:
Dec 13
Dec 15
Dec 16
Dec 28
Dec 30
Dec 31
Jan 3
Jan 5
Jan 6

Gibby is a great player but realistically speaking he will be playing for the hounds this December. That's not a knock against him either, only the most exceptional 17 or 18 year olds make it.

Agreed. Next year is his most likely opportunity.

So, I was trying to wait until 25% of the way through the season until making an early assessment of what this team should do. Since the 17th game is Thursday, but then 18 & 19 follow in short order, I had suggested that after 16 games might be a good spot to pause and take stock. That would be now.

Unfortunately, I still don't have a strong feeling either way.

The team is clearly good. 11-5-0 record is currently tied for first in the league. And that has been achieved thus far with our first line centre running cold for most of the stretch, and our 3rd line centre being injured/away for most of the stretch. Lots of promising things coming from elsewhere in the lineup however. Karki's production being probably the most obvious boost. But Allard has been almost equally as impressive. Beck has integrated seamlessly into the lineup. And both Cloutier and Mignosa seem to be making a case to be included in our top 6. Do we have enough firepower in the forwards to be a true contender? Our scoring depth seems to be pretty good, but I think we might be a T-3 winger short.

Defensively, I made the argument before we traded Toms that we were a T-4 defenseman short of having a group that could contend. When healthy, our T-4 is solid. If we have an injury in our T-4 then I am not convinced that any of Virgilio, Brodie, or Evans are ready to step in. However, we will likely have lots of opportunity through the World Juniors to see what this might look like. It will be very interesting to see which players get the opportunity, and what they make of it.

In goal, it seems like we might be settling in to a more stable pairing. Miller has been pretty good in his more recent starts. Schenkel has also been playing pretty well. Is this pairing good enough to contend? Right now I feel like goal is potentially the position where we are least likely to need to add, but as we continue to evaluate from now until the new year, that may change.

So, at these early stages in the season, I find us most likely 2 additions away from being a true contender.

If we were to spend the assets for those additions this year, the challenge would be how to recoup those assets? Gibson should be moved 100% next season. In addition we would have some pretty good OAs to move next year (Allard, Carlisle, Schenkel, Fantino). Unfortunately, it's just not enough - even if we moved all of them - to restock completely and end up with a slight surplus in picks to get ready for another run 2 years from now when Martin is 18. And that is without any potential addition at goal this season.

It doesn't mean I don't think we should go all in, and it also doesn't mean we should - it just means I think if we go all in then it pushes back our next potential window by a year, having to trade away some of the '06 group and not contending again until Martin is 19. Still lots of time to evaluate if this is the right group to push our chips into the middle with.

i'm in a similar place. our meager draft cupboards could be a limiting factor come the trade deadline and if we go all in it's going to deplete them like we haven't seen in years. a big part of me would still rather see us build a juggernaut around Martin/Hayes 19 year old season but we'll see how i feel going into the world jr. season i guess.

I still think an often scoffed at option of standing pat might be in order this season.

1) we would still deal Gibson and a couple OAs next year to restock, but we wouldn't be restocking from empty. It should allow us to get our picks up to a place where we could be ready to add again in 2 years time.

2) none of us believe that Raftis will sell this year. If Raftis refuses to even consider selling, it might be the next best option available.

3) this team is close to being a contender as is. we might organically develop our T-3 winger and T-4 defenseman from our existing roster by giving them the opportunity and allowing them to grow into the role.

As I said , I will be closely watching our bottom 3 defensemen during world juniors, and keeping a close eye on our RW quartet of Cloutier, Mignosa, Sirizzotti and Hayes up to the deadline to see if these areas of need might be filling organically from within.

You might be right....I just don't think they have enough picks to add more than 2 players max and I don't know if that would be enough. Not to mention that leaves you with nothing left going forward. I do think you would get a big return for Gibson next season and should be able to get a decent return for an OA or two but that wouldn't create a surplus. We have seen Raftis be creative in the past (Thompson for 2 players and 1 2nd) so maybe he will find a way to make it work. OA upgrades may be a cheaper option? D'Intino has something like 3 points in his last ten games playing on the top line.
