True on paper. Of course in reality Toronto will probably give him an 8x$15M and a full NMC.
Yeah. It's a good test for Toronto's management. I absolutely understand managements mentality about not letting a player walk for free, but at some time they have to evaluate if this actually helps their pursuit of a SC or not. Cut your losses, so as to speak.

Marner does NOT have the power to dictate what the Leafs management does beyond this season, but if they want 8 more years of the same, there is no-one to blame but themselves.

People acting like the Leafs are idiots to extend a 27 year old with 639 points in 576 games.

He had a dud playoff.

Year before, he had 14 points in 11 playoff games, and before that, 8 in 7.

But everyone decided it was Mitch’s time in the barrel this year.

Well it worked - talk enough shit about a guy for an entire season, and watch as he puts too much pressure on himself and has 3 in 7.

The idiotic thing to do is trade your 1.11 PPG star player.

Who is from your friggen Town, no less.

Toronto, this is why you can’t have nice things.
Wow, finally a sensible post. Most fans are fed up (which is reasonable) but are too emotional. Last time Leafs acted on emotion we traded Kadri and it was a huge regret. People that think players can’t get better are operating with a very fixed mindset.

Huge regret the guy was suspended twice in a row in both playoffs. Leafs could not afford to pay guy who gets suspended.

And then won a cup. He learned and got better. What did the pieces back do for us? Nothing. An emotional decision, and clearly the wrong one.

Marner wasn’t good this playoffs, no one will argue that. But he had been good in the playoffs before. He suffered a bad injury weeks before the playoffs and never looked the same since his return. High ankle sprains are brutal, I know this personnally, it takes months to fully recover. Everyone is acting on emotion but the pros who know what is really going on shouldn’t operate with the same emotion. If this news is true they know why he didn’t perform and want to extend. It’s a good sign. We’re all just behind our screens.

He was also suspended in the playoffs with Colorado.

Trading Kadri wasn’t the mistake, trading him for 2 mediocre assets was the mistake.

Thinking long term 7-8 is good. Made his money already, He's not a person to build around. Maybe 9 if commited.

Why not see what he looks like under Berube first if you can’t find a trade? Having a hard time seeing what role he plays in a north south forecheck heavy system. I guess Tre didn’t learn from signing Huberdeau before seeing how he fit the system.

My bad, you’re absolutely right.

He had just turned down a trade with Calgary, then was gone by jul 1, just weeks after their exit. You’re right, crap assets back. But what makes us think marner with nmc when we are trying to get rid of him will return amazing value? We’d be getting rid of him, and it’s highly unlikely we would get fair value with such little leverage.

Boston will be 7-0 by the time this shitstains new contract is up

Boston will be

Id rather see the leafs lose their team for a decade and then get an expansion

Then see the core 4 brought for next 4-8 years (tavares bitch ass will get signed too for sure if were bringing back marner)

Holy f*** treliving your a bitch. Shanahan is the worst executive in the league

Tavares is off the books next year hes signed this year still

Tavares will get 3 years 5M with this management group when hes should get booted out of town
Right, but he’ll be gone when the extension actually kicks in.

He was a perfect player to play north/south hockey and the fact you compare him to huberdeau is just funny.

A unidimebtionnal offensive player minded player who's constantly taking shift off defensively, playing 100 feet of the ice and cheating for the offensive end * reason #1 why that didn't go well with Sutter and finished ob 3rd line) vs the best two-way winger in the NHL who never taking any shift off to defend. Sure that's making sense.

The fact he's great defensively, pretty great stick and to smart to go on passing lane. he's probably the guy who will benefit the most or north south system with a higher forecheck because he will be able to create a lot of turnover.

Interesting timing, right after McDavid goes supernova. Maybe they realize he’s not coming to Toronto so no point in trying to set aside cap space for him.

This. Plus Berube won't give him his binky and a bed time story the way Keefe did

With a player like Marner, there really always was only two options. Trade or sign. Based on this they’re going the opposite path that I’d like, but I’ll be happy to eat crow one day. Maybe the offers sucked and losing him for free is just not feasible.

Sure the points look good so let's look at those performances. 14 points in 11 games. 10 points in the first four games and 4 in the next 7. Previous year was 8 points in 7 games. 5 points in the first 2 games and 3 in the next 5 games . Putting up points early in a series and then fading away doesn't make him a great playoff performer, especially when the team has gotten out of the first round once in eight trips to the playoffs
He also has 6 goals in his last 43 playoffs games.

Marner will get an offer that he will refuse. This will result in a trade request from either Marner or MLSE.
