Last year:

This year:

Is it not still good to have an NHLer in the front office?

He had no defined role yet, they were working to see where he would be most productive.

Well he chose to leave, so how can he grow into our Yzerman or Sakic if his loyalty isn't to the Leafs organization but Kyle Dubas?

But why are you pretending now that no one should care about this and he'd bring no value?

See ya Spezza, wish you the best. This probably doesn’t impact the on ice product in any meaningful way.

I’m just happy that we will have a new GM and Coach. I want to see a new culture on the team that doesn’t consist of everyone getting along and management being approachable.

Wes Clark, the amateur scouting guy, Brandon Pridham the money guy and Haley Wickenheiser the AGM are still here. So unless they are actually cardboard cut outs the draft and free agent budgeting should still be operational. Shanahan can come down from his tower and provide more on the ground direction. Spezza, all due respect, was more of the popcorn guy.
Bet he made a mean iced cap.

And that time is when you're entering a lengthy rebuild, not when you're a top tier team with top tier players in their prime.
Ya we sure are going to miss Dubas’s 1 single round win in 7 years….5 of those years being under Dubas’s direct control. Ya that’s gonna be real hard to replace

The sad part from Dubas‘s perspective is if he hadn’t of used some lame presser to claim that he wasn’t sure he still wanted to be the GM and then when Shanny said he still wanted him even after that red flag he sends over a big contract ask he would still have the job.
This whole debacle lands squarely at Dubas’s feet

According to James Mirtle from The Athletic, former Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas might join the rival Ottawa Senators as president along with Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson in supporting roles if he receives a significant offer in a role with full autonomy in the coming months.

Given how complex the Leafs roster decisions are going to be this offseason, getting that GM hire right will be imperative. Without Dubas, the Leafs front office is low on experienced hands, and with so many currently in place contemplating their futures, the exodus could create even more uncertainty as the draft and free agency approach at the end of next month.

As for Dubas’ future, while he stated on Monday that he didn’t anticipate quickly relocating to a new role, the thinking around the league right now is that his views may change if he receives a significant offer in a role with full autonomy in the coming months. The situation in Ottawa, in particular, could be intriguing, with new, deep-pocketed ownership and a young roster on the rise.

A front office with the rival Senators that included Dubas as president and Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson in supporting roles would certainly make things interesting in the Atlantic Division.

Not that the Maple Leafs will need any help creating headlines at this point given the organizational upheaval that is going to continue to unfold this offseason.[/URL]

Mirtle is just making crap up. No way Dubas becomes president of the Senators.

Maybe B/c spezza was a possible long-term add that could grow into a quality management employee in 5 years time

He wasn't adding value this year in a made up role, however he now had the chance to do so as Dubas was gone and he could serve in player development/scouting role helping identify new talent and work his way up the Org.

He didn't fail at this job, he quit prior to even attempting the job. The dude is a straight loser like all the other vets we had

He can work his way up another org if hes capable. We don't need management's loyal to dubas but rather to the leafs and developing their own careers.

Your bias towards dubas blinds you once more

I'm guessing Spezza isn't a mover and shaker in that front office having just completed his rookie season and attached to Dubas basically as a management intern. But I wonder if it represents a larger schism in the front office. Kyle guys vs Brendan guys.
Are there Shanny guys? Spezza was attached to Dubas for sure but I am sensing there is more going on than we know. I suspect the new GM will likely replace Keefe immediately or he'll be on a tight leash.

Cause he hasn't had time to bring value, and took his ball and went home...
Completely agree. The next few weeks will separate the wheat from the chaff, with front office, coaching, and players. I'm guessing those who sulk, pout, make ridiculous demands, or air their dirty laundry in public aren't built for the Leafs moving forward.

This core has had multiple years to prove themselves and they have one round to show for it. Unacceptable. Spezza should have manned up if he wanted to be part of the organization and the players are going to need to be willing to leave some money on the table when negotiating their next contracts to stay.

My guess is the kid gloves and handing out blank checks are over.

I hope there are no "Shanny" guys and they're just "Leaf" guys (and gals etc).
Yes, that's what I was getting at. For all his faults -- and there are a few -- Shanahan undoubtedly understands the privilege that comes with being a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Some incredibly short-sighted takes.
But, coming from Leaf fans, it's almost second nature to be short sighted and focused on the micro while forgoing the big picture.

The star players were not worried, someone said.

Worries about what, exactly?

25 year old multi millionaires with talent oozing out of them have what to be worried about?

Moving to another team where they will make just as much money and have just as good a chance to win?

Maybe you're assuming they won't get offers as attractive as the ones from Toronto? Bahahahah

As for the Spezza situation:

There is a saying: The rising tide lifts all boats.

Normally, that's used to illustrate the benefit of some usually means the benefit of everyone else.

However, you can use that to gauge the mood of different people.

You don't need to measure the water lever itself, if the boats start rising, it's a clear sign the tide is coming up.

The Spezza resignation signifies the mood of the people in the organization that are closest to the players, and it should be inferred, the players as well.

Spezza had a unique role in the league -> immediately former player in the head office with unlimited connections throughout the league.

Players considering Toronto could just reach out to a peer (as close to a current player as could be), and ask about conditions here.

That's gone.

It may not seem like much, but when convincing players to come here, anything that could offset the (real or perceived) extra scrutiny or stress associated with Toronto, every bit is needed.

The closest we have left is Gio, but he's an active player and it's a little different.

I'd prefer if Dubas doesn't land in our division, so I care.

Unless you're not a Leafs fan you should probably too.

Even if you think he only is good at constructing regular season teams, I'd like him out of our division for that reason.

That's not particularly the point to me.

Right now, the Leafs have much bigger things to think about than Kyle Dubas' future. Why should any of us care?

Dubas is not part of the team anymore and losing sleep over what this freaking guy does in his future career smacks of insecurity.
