Yeah, it's weird. For a while last season Conte seemed like the perfect fit for Tottenham. The team was winning and Son was scoring like crazy.This is all on top of the fact that Son himself just isn't playing well.
Historically, Son has been allowed to run into space on the left wing. This was true under Poch, Mourinho, and even last year under Conte. This year, Conte has instituted "his" system, which calls for the LWB (usually Perisic) to be the highest player up the field on the left hand side. When Sessengon plays, he usually doesn't start as high, but the idea is the same - Son is supposed to tuck inside and play with his back to goal and facilitate play up field. This is essentially what he's worst at and minimizes what he's best at.
Don't get me wrong, he's not capitalizing on the few chances he is getting, but he's being asked to do something he's not great at.
Maybe he lacks the tactical flexibility to adapt when things don't go so well. When you play a defensive-minded counter system and you somehow concede more goals than any other team in the top half of the league, maybe it's time to make a change.
