G Mackenzie Blackwood (50% retained)
CAR 2025 3rd round pick
To be honest, I would be surprised if this or a similar trade doesn’t happen
Canes need a reliable goalie given the injuries and the Sharks need an opening for Askarov
That kinda complicates things, as Canes don’t have much cap spaceI do think we will trade blackwood. But I hope it will be for a second.
By the way --- the sharks can't retain.
I would not be surprised if the 3rd party team actually gets a better asset than the Sharks do (assuming 50% retention). I’m not sure that’s happened before, but I also am not sure a team has been in the same position as the Sharks are with their retention slots.Sharks can’t retain so if you need it, it’ll require a 5th to a 3rd team or something like that.
No, not enough

While I've learned to never say never, I'll be surprised to see Blackwood get a 2nd round pick or more.Anything short of a 2nd round pick, I want the Sharks to re-sign Blackwood and move out Vanecek.
He's a better 1 or 2 year stopgap and eventual backup for Askarov. A perfect teammate for a young goaltender.

GMs are often dumb though, so you never know.
Another stat-looker.14 decent games after sucking for years suddenly makes Blackwood worth more than a 3rd round pick?
That’s very understandable. IMO, goalies don’t have as much trade value as fans like to think. They are more valuable to the team that has them, so I get what you are saying.I'm fine with that.
I'd much rather trade Vanecek for a mid round pick.

Blackwood has been decent his entire time in SJ.14 decent games after sucking for years suddenly makes Blackwood worth more than a 3rd round pick?
Fair enough. I'll take your word for it as I don't watch SJ.Blackwood has been decent his entire time in SJ.
if you expect a 2nd without retention it could get rough.I do think we will trade blackwood. But I hope it will be for a second.

his ability to stay healthy was a major problem with the devils. fully healthy he had good stretches. but the lack of alternatives ruined his health, confidence, performance and relationship with the organization. Some things to think about when looking at a goalie, is that it needs to be the right fit in Carolina.
Canes play a systems that allows few shots on goal. 2nd fewest in the NHL so goalies will often go stretches without getting shots against them. SJ, on the other hand, allows a LOT of shots on goal, 2nd MOST in the NHL, so their goalie is always seeing some action. Canes also play a system that when it breaks down, can lead to more high danger chances. Canes allow the 11th MOST 5v5 HD shots / game in the NHL at 7.18 HD Shots/60 (SJ is 10th at 7.21, so the same amount at Carolina).
Point being that a goalie won't get a ton of action and needs to be able to stay sharp, because when he does see action, there's a higher % of the action that will likely be high danger chances.
Carolina has the best 5v5 HDSV% at 88.5%. SJ is middle of the pack at 82.3%. Kochetkov has a .908 5v5 HDSV% (Last year, Freddie had .894). Blackwood has .842 5v5 HDSV%.
I haven't watched Blackwood enough in SJ to say if he'd be a good fit one way or another but for the years I've seen him in NJ, my assessment is that he would be a bad fit. Maybe he's changed though, as players do develop and confidence is a big part of a goalies performance.
I doubt it. If you want the goalie you have to pay their price to get him. That price is likely higher than the 5th round pick it would take for another team to retain 50% of what’s left by then.I would not be surprised if the 3rd party team actually gets a better asset than the Sharks do (assuming 50% retention). I’m not sure that’s happened before, but I also am not sure a team has been in the same position as the Sharks are with their retention slots.
