G Mackenzie Blackwood (50% retained)

:sharks

CAR 2025 3rd round pick

To be honest, I would be surprised if this or a similar trade doesn’t happen

Canes need a reliable goalie given the injuries and the Sharks need an opening for Askarov

Sharks can’t retain so if you need it, it’ll require a 5th to a 3rd team or something like that.
I would not be surprised if the 3rd party team actually gets a better asset than the Sharks do (assuming 50% retention). I’m not sure that’s happened before, but I also am not sure a team has been in the same position as the Sharks are with their retention slots.

Some things to think about when looking at a goalie, is that it needs to be the right fit in Carolina.

Canes play a systems that allows few shots on goal. 2nd fewest in the NHL so goalies will often go stretches without getting shots against them. SJ, on the other hand, allows a LOT of shots on goal, 2nd MOST in the NHL, so their goalie is always seeing some action. Canes also play a system that when it breaks down, can lead to more high danger chances. Canes allow the 11th MOST 5v5 HD shots / game in the NHL at 7.18 HD Shots/60 (SJ is 10th at 7.21, so the same amount at Carolina).

Point being that a goalie won't get a ton of action and needs to be able to stay sharp, because when he does see action, there's a higher % of the action that will likely be high danger chances.

Carolina has the best 5v5 HDSV% at 88.5%. SJ is middle of the pack at 82.3%. Kochetkov has a .908 5v5 HDSV% (Last year, Freddie had .894). Blackwood has .842 5v5 HDSV%.

I haven't watched Blackwood enough in SJ to say if he'd be a good fit one way or another but for the years I've seen him in NJ, my assessment is that he would be a bad fit. Maybe he's changed though, as players do develop and confidence is a big part of a goalies performance.

Anything short of a 2nd round pick, I want the Sharks to re-sign Blackwood and move out Vanecek.

He's a better 1 or 2 year stopgap and eventual backup for Askarov. A perfect teammate for a young goaltender.

While I've learned to never say never, I'll be surprised to see Blackwood get a 2nd round pick or more.

GMs are often dumb though, so you never know.
