I think at the end of his career, Crosby will be similar to Phil Esposito in points. Espo won 2 Harts, 3 Art Ross & 2 Lindseys, also very comparable to Crosby. The only difference being the Stanley Cups. So that would in my opinion put Crosby around 8-10 all time for forwards and maybe top 20-25 for all time players. Maybe. Will be interesting to see what happens as the Pens decline in the next few years and as Crosby ages.

If Jumbo retires, Crosby will be the active leading all time scorer. Jagr was just the leader for 7 years, Gretzky was leader for 11 years and Gordie Howe was leader for 13. If nothing goes awry, Crosby could post a number somewhere between Jagr and Gretzky, unless Ovie overtakes him.

He's a really tough player to rank. Orr certainly boosted him, but Espo was still one of the best players in the world. He wasn't your typical center which probably lowers his rank for some too. But no doubt Orr is the biggest reason.

If he keeps going like this for a few more years, I'm sure it wouldn't be silly to call him the fifth greatest player ever. But on a per game basis, this season is his best (or second best at worst) since his last Hart season, which was five years ago. Can he really follow it up with another season of the same quality next year? It will be hard considering his age.

I'd rank his post 2014 seasons as such:

Crosby can definitely play at that level until his mid to late 30’s. I think what hurt Crosby’s offensive production the last 4 years was mainly because he didn’t have an elite 35-40 goals scorer on his side to finish his plays, until Jake Guentzel happened.

He was better in 16/17 than this year offensively. He was actually about at the same level this year as he was in 14/15 and 15/16. He never had a goalscorer on his side his whole career.

I don't know how you can say he's firmly 5th.

I have him at either 4 or 5 amongst centres behind Gretzky, Lemieux, and Beliveau. Morenz is a toss up.

I would have him behind Bobby Hull and Howe for wingers. Probably Jagr and Richard too.

Behind Orr and Harvey for d. Probably behind Shore . Maybe even behind Bourque and Lidstrom.

That's not even touching goalies

Most of this site is post-2000 born, they'll recognize Gretzky, Orr and Lemieux but not a chance they know who the bolded are

Otherwise, I think he's a great player, but not top 5 for the reasons stated by GreatGonzo. Crosby never dominated but received solid backing from a very good team.

Put 40 goals scorer Guentzel on Sid’s line during those seasons and he probably has 15 more assists in each season
