I always look for ideas on how to prevent things like this from happening in the future after horrible days like this. Rarely do I find that discussion. carry on things will be back to "normal" in a couple days.
Put up a fence, up the security. Good luck.

The problem is - there is no real way to truly prevent these things from happening. Not unless you want to give up your freedoms and liberties enjoyed currently.

big changes need to happen in the way we as humans live. until people realize that, we will always have these attacks. and they will get worse.

Israel is a perfect example of this. Its impossible to stop from happening completely. You just have to go on living with your life.

And the shooter didn't.

We know nothing of his motive, we know that he converted recently thus it is being reported as an ISIS lonewolf attack when it very well may be nothing more than severe mental illness. I'll wait for facts to come out, was he taking any prescription medicine that may have made him susceptible to committing these acts, was he indeed persuaded by religion to do what he did, what were the conflicts of his life leading up to the shooting? These things need to be answered

Going to cut it short and agree to disagree here, as it's going to get overly political as a result.

Watch Fox and tell me how it is compared to CNN

Yeah sometimes tells me that would be worse than cnn if it was possible. lol

Fox, CNN, CBC, all media for that matter, have a specific narrative to push. Propaganda and corruption runs rampant throughout.

Hope those in Ottawa stay safe

Well with regards to the incident today, I didn't see any agenda pushing from cbc. I don't watch the news, but maybe on other topics they do.

When they're discussing current world events, they're pretty spot on.
If they're discussing Canadian politics, that's where they'll get accused of being heavily slanted (typically to the party promising to give them the most funding).

Today's reporting falls under current events. One advantage of being a publicly funded station, you don't have to push to get those eyeballs and so can focus on the facts.

Thoughts are with you guys are your city tonight.
Canada stands as one today, and for as long as the people of Ottawa need.

Re: CNN and CBC, perfect example of how fundamentally important a publicly funded news agency is in democratic society. It's paramount for Canada to keep the CBC strong which has not been the case in recent years and all their cuts.

More education. Education improves everything.

What happened today was awful and should never happen. However, it does annoy me when something like this gets so much attention, not saying it doesn't deserve it, but when a significant study comes out proving climate change is destroying life on earth and that we're in the last generation or 2 of pretty much all life, not just human life, it gets pushed to the side with no thought. Maddening.

Not sure if off topic.

Agreed, though with the caveat that we include BOTH sides.

I'm not eager to hear the uninformed, ignorant minority of Canadians who will be making complete fools of themselves tomorrow by going on some asinine rant against Islam/Arabs/Muslims/"insert ethnic slang here".

I can't even tolerate to be around people like that... like, even in the same room. Take that 2nd grade mentality elsewhere, jack. We're better than that.

I recall about 5 years ago on this site a poster stating that he "gets all his news from twitter now" (I think it was in a discussion surrounding the mainstream media and how it was dying in the internet age).

Reading it all I could do was facepalm at the concept of relying on 140 character messages from largely anonymous strangers most of whom would have no concept of journalistic reliability and integrity.

Huh.

I've been getting all my news from Twitter for probably more than five years now. And there are probably lots of people who do. Doesn't mean I take the word of some random stranger. I usually get my news on my timeline from the likes of Ottawa Citizen, Breaking News, CTV News and local radio stations.

I don't think, even five years ago, there was reason to "facepalm" anyone getting their news on twitter.

I think the issue though especially on a day like today where you have 100s of various reports going out, all of the 'breaking news' reports are out of context due to the character limit.

Having a proper journalist write an article to explain the situation around the reports, provides you with some actual point of reference as to what all is going on.

Conversely it shows it's value in cases like today when the story is rapidly developing and there aren't enough concrete facts to form an article.

There's room for both.

I'm not going to live my life in fear and even though I work downtown ish I am going back to my daily life tomorrow.

With that said I can't help but feel this was just a part of something bigger...like a dry run or a distraction or something. Too much of it doesn't make sense.

I can't help but feel the opposite, actually.

The entire thing feels completely random. Seems like there was almost no planning for this. This shooter had his passport taken away by RCMP already, was being monitored, had a past criminal record...

This doesn't seem organized in any sense of the word.

.

It s a tricky thing to balance, we don't want give up our rights and freedoms for security...However,once Canada had agreed to join in he bombing in Iraq they probably should have raised the security level in Parliament. Evidently its been at medium for years but they should have foreseen that that would provoke these lone wolves or weirdo wanna be jihadis or whatever they prove to be.

And 2 years ago the auditor general said that security needed to be beefed up on Parliament Hill.
