What I can't understand is that everyone is so quick to hate Muslims and Arabs when this guy was barely Arab, and was a new "convert" (wtv that means). People in Ottawa have been living with an Arabs and Muslims for generations who have contributed to society as law abiding citizens and adopted Canadian values, and then one random French-Canadian with a drug and criminal history decides to "convert" to Islam and in this his new stage of self-discovery rampages against an innocent soldier and citizens in the city. To me, there is no correlation here between violence and Islam. And on that note there is no correlation between Isis and Islam... it's a geo-political issue rather than a religious one.

I hope they don't close off access to the parliament lawn because of this.

He was half Arab and a Muslim covert. His father fought against Gadaffi in Libya. I dont see how people dont see a correlation between him converting to islam and then executing a terror attack. Guy actually sounds exactly like the Boston Marathon Bomber. Blow out who was never a devote Muslim then was inspired after he looked for a purpose in life and took up the arms of a fanatic. Muslims in general are very excepting people and the Quran even goes out of its way to say Christian, Jews and Muslims probably worship the same deity. Like so many thinks though it can be corrupted and used to influence weak minds.

15 years ago everyone would've been screaming about illegal drugs. People need a label to point at and blame to make sense of the madness.

I really hope we don't see what happened in the US after 9/11 with citizens going after innocent people who looked muslim (eg. brown). I hope Canadians are better than that

There are fools everywhere. Most people I know aren't those "citizens : you speak of.

I hope they get all who are involved. I am convinced some people are just evil.

The next Sens game there will probably be very emotional. Don't let a few evil people keep you from living your life and going to the games. My sister didn't want me to go the the B's game in Boston after the bombings in 2013....I am happy I went.

Ottawa is a city I have on my list to visit. I love Canada (my Dad was born in Halifax, N.S.).

Peace to all and prayers to the young man who lost his life :(

What a crazy day!

I get really upset when I think about that poor kid...

24 years old, gets up to go work and gets shot by some POS who then tries to go on a rampage

And now the worst is on it's way: racism, xenophobia, police state, scaremongering etc.... I am not looking forward to the next few days

So any updates on if people are able to get out of the downtown yet? Or some of you still stuck at work?

You never expect these scenarios. It's not even fathomable to Canadians. It's truly unfortunate that this hero, and I call him a hero because he was defending a war monument at the time of the attack, had to see his life ended by a maniac.

RIP Cpl Cirillo

I heard that on the news. Guy was born in Canada. Anyway, I figure we should blame half of Arabs in the world then? No one wants to blame French-Canadians.

We dont know his motive but considering he converted shortly before the attack i think religion had somewhat of a influence on him. Whether he wanted to die a martyr or just wanted to die and go to heaven i'm not so sure he does this without influence from religion

According to twitter the lockdown is over, so I would assume so. I know that my mom is still stuck in the core though, as are many others.

Watched a little bit of cnn and cbc. The difference is just... astounding. The first thing I heard when I flipped to the cnn channel was jihad. This was when the shooter was unknown. wth?

While cbc was just reporting facts they confirmed.

I always look for ideas on how to prevent things like this from happening in the future after horrible days like this. Rarely do I find that discussion. carry on things will be back to "normal" in a couple days.
Put up a fence, up the security. Good luck.

So is there any connection at all for what happened in Montreal yesterday and the events that transpired today? I assume it to be related just because of the timing. I'm also wondering what that means for future days and if we can expect more of these types of attacks.

I mean life will go one probably by tomorrow as normal for all of us ... but I wonder if as they said, this was part of a bigger plan throughout NA and in the next few days more shootings could occur.

That doesn't sound like sympathy. That sounds like an attempt to find a motive. Something like this is pretty unfathomable to most of us. It's pretty natural to look for some kind of explanation.

Well Harper's addressed called Montreal's incident an ISIL-inspired attack, but did not mention them with respect to today's.
Also, La Presse reported that today's was a 'lone wolf' with no greater ties.

So it looks coincidental, but too early to tell.

He was just a dumbass

Dumbasses find reasons to do dumbass things

This has very little to do with religion outside of the need to label offenders
