ISIS ties to the shooter still unconfirmed.

Well the Quebec guy Harper said was part of ISIS in his conference.(Attack on two soldiers) Also on CTV I think it was they said the source was ISIS. [mod] he definitely was their to do some real destruction to the country, not just one of those nut jobs.

From what I understand, he was given an evaluation in 2011 after robbing someone in Vancouver and uttering threats.

I think it's fair to say that his situation could have changed a great deal from then till today and leading up to him being targeted by the authorities. He had been brought up on drug charges and spend 61 days in jail back in 2004 as well.

To me, it's of the utmost importance to trace the past 10 years of this man's life understand what drove him to do what he did. If he's a radical and motivated by an extremist and non mainstream branch of Islam, why did he turn to this after his criminal past? What did he identify with and why did this seem more appealing than the life many of us live here in peace? How can we prevent others in the future from feeling what he felt?

I feel completely the same way. The only way to prevent stuff like this from happening again, is to understand why it happened.

Yes that was the 5th murder in Ottawa in 2014. It is late October. There is almost a million people in Ottawa. Your chance of being murdered in Ottawa is almost insignificant statistically.

We ARE safe. We are safer BY FAR then any human society ever has been. If we try to make things "safer" it will likely do the opposite, or eliminate our freedoms. Do you want the government recording 90% of the time you are outside your house? And every web search you do at home, at work and on your phone? Do you want metal detectors in schools, libraries, office buildings? Want a wand when you enter the Scotia bank place or every mall?

To protect us from a mentally ill person who will go on a rampage every dozen years regardless of precautions?

I hope no. This isn't Israel, and we don't want it to be Washington. Clearly we need better security on entering the parliament buildings. This is not something that would change our freedoms. Can't secure the war memorial or downtown... Impossible. Crazies will act crazy. You can't stop that.

Last time I went to CTC they used a wand on everyone.

Maybe, but this isn't the Quebec situation and no one knows the extent of his affiliation, if any, as yet.

That "article" is a load of horsesh*t.
Editorialized from the beginning, it's basically an op-ed piece by a film director.
A film director?
It's from the English paper The Independent which is very good especially in international affairs.I dont agree with everything they say here, but I do agree that we have moved away from our traditional more even handed and neutral stance with an an emphasis on peacekeeping.

How can we prevent others in the future from feeling what he felt?

Besides him having Islamic influences from his father who fought in a militia group against Gaddafi( he didnt just convert out of no where). I'd say the Boston Bomber could show a similar story. The Boston Bomber was a man who struggled through life in america, arrested of petty charges and was known for not being very devout religiously. A year before the bombing he took extreme religious view influenced by propaganda and he identified with radicalized Muslims. A guy who quote was called a "loser" by his uncle and "couldnt make it in america" sought idolization amongst other radicals as well as having the promise of having his religious devoting lead to rewards in the after life. They literally write songs, poems, posters and have them in magazines. As im sure many of us know a lot of people turn to religion in their darker times in life. Just so happens that some of them turn into zealots.

Does anyone know if the war memorial will be open to lay flowers and pay respects to Nathan Cirillo? God bless our city and this beautiful Country. Reject fear.

Last time I went to CTC they used a wand on everyone.

For the home opener they were doing it to seemingly every 3rd or 4th person.

This stupidity (in my opinion) started after the Boston Marathon bombing.

This is what we SHOULDN'T DO in the wake of this attack. In my opinion. Reactionary and pointless.

A film director?

Yep.

Google the author's name. She's a Canadian with roots in Afghanistan. I recognized it right away, Nelofer Pazira. She starred in "Khandahar", and was an award-winning director of a few Arabic-themed pieces like "Return To Khandahar", and did a movie about honor killings recently.

It's an op-ed piece by a Canadian with emotional ties to the discussion.

It was right after the Boston bombing. The NHL used that as an opportunity to check people way more thoroughly at games. It's more used to find people smuggling alcohol into the games than actually keeping people safe but nobody questions it because fear and bombs.

They revoked his passport for a reason. He was also under CSIS watch.

Please cite sources if you're making concrete claims.
No reliable media outlet that I've found has confirmed the statement for revoking passport, only say that there are reports that he is one of those people.

Just like we had reports earlier in the day of 3 shootings, and 5 gunmen and motorcycles and rooftop assailants.
