Yeah, my biggest fear are the people who will hijack this event and use it to further their own agendas. Already starting to see some things happening online in regards to this.

Thank you. That is a wonderful quote.

On another note, when my school went to Ottawa on a grade 7 field trip I don't recall there being a soldier when I visited the memorial. RIP to Corporal. Nathan Cirillo and a round of applause to Sergeant at Arms Kevin Vickers

The ultimate irony is that despite the radical delusional concept that murder (for whatever belief, right or wrong) leads to martyrdom, it will be Nathan Cirillo who is forever remembered by all those who now know his name and why he died.

Welcome to the age of social media in a globalized world. Cirillo is now more 'immortalized' in the history of Canada through our community conscience and communication than the naïve mis-lead idiot who shot him.

Who's the martyr now?

Been to Washington? Where you can't walk near the Whitehouse, there is uber security and metal detectors everywhere? Screw that. Ottawa should be free. No barriers and fences and crap. We have good security and police. They responded well today. We don't need to live in a police state because a small handful of people are crazy.

There's still quite a distance between jumping the White House fence & being an actual thread. Just ask the last guy who did it & was tackled by guards and attacked by dogs like 30 meters in or whatever it was

I'm pretty sure the last guy actually made it inside the building and then was finally tackled down. Still can't believe they didn't shoot him.

I really hope the person who killed the shooter/terrorist isn't awarded with a medal, or called hero. He did what he had to do, leave it at that no need to celebrate the suspects death.

Its not possible to be more heroic then what he did.

I wish the suspect lived and was in jail for the rest of his life.

I'm trying to make a point of remembering the soldier's name and learning about him.

As for the loser who shot him, I've already forgotten his name, and will try to forget anything about him except the simplest description.

Really sad wake up call for a city that was under prepared for this type of situation, even more so that these incidents the past few days were preventable given the information authorities had. I hope this sets in process a change in some of our extremely relaxed protocols/laws...safety of the people should always be the number one priority, not being politically correct.

Harper's address to the nation was one of saddest thing I've ever seen in my life. I can understand that he was shocked by the events but the man had no fire to him, no warmth, nothing, it was like looking at a blank slate. Definitely not the kind of leadership that we need to navigate us through these tough times. Trudeau tried to adopt a stronger tone but it was as convincing as a 7 year wearing fatigues saying he’s out to conquer the world.

? Seems like the city actually was pretty well prepared in terms of response.

There's nothing you can do to prevent someone stopping in a public outdoor space and firing on a nearby bystander... At least not unless you want to reduce access to that space.

As far as Parliament goes, perhaps some more measures are needed... But I think one of the things that sets us apart is the access we enjoy to those grounds.

The city is phenomenally safe.

As was pointed out earlier in the thread - there have been 5 murders in Ottawa in 2014. Five. And the year is almost over.

If anything, I'm phenomenally surprised at how quickly things got shut down in the downtown core. This is a downtown area of a city with over a million people in it, and they were able to control the situation very, very quickly. Speaks volumes not only about the impressive professionalism and shining quality of the people charged with that duty, but also the great citizens of the city who were phenomenally accommodating and understanding, and worked with the city instead of shrinking away or taking advantage of the situation.

Ottawa is one of the safest cities in the world, and after the reaction to this recent event, I'd say one of the best. Don't let a fluke act by a piece of **** degenerate change anything.

I didn't think they were unprepared. They had guys in full gear there right away. Snipers on designated rooftops and as Bonk said, locked down the core. It is not easy evacuating a mall let alone the hub of a city.

It is impossible to prevent a random shooting that happens outdoors. How well prepared a city is can only be determined by what happens afterwards. Within minutes the entire downtown area was swarmed by police, and the gunman was killed without taking another life. There were loads of precautionary measures, which is a good thing. No one took any chances.

I'm incredibly proud to call this city my home.

First response was incredible, as were the actions of Kevin Vickers at Parliament.

We live in a superlatively safe country - however, some of our foreign policy (rightly or wrongly) has slightly raised the threat of a terrorist attack: the ITAC (IIRC) upgraded the threat level in Canada from "unlikely" to "could happen" just days after we announced our intentions in Iraq.

I'm not trying to get political, but the warning signs were there that something like this was on the horizon.

RIP Nathan Cirillo. May we forever remember your name and your life, instead of giving the lunatic who killed you the post-mortem platform he so viciously wanted.

If it wasn't evident from my last post: I'm ****ing proud of you, Ottawa. Proud to call Ottawa my hometown, even if I'm away indefinitely for the moment.

Handled yesterday's events like pros, all of you. Amazing effort to cooperate with law enforcement, cool under pressure when a lot of your buildings got locked down, everyone stayed calm, everyone understood what was going on and knew the gravity of the situation, yet I have not yet heard any stories of mass panic or even worse, people taking advantage of the situation to engage in shenanigans while law enforcement were otherwise occupied.

Really, really proud man. Seriously. Warms my heart all the way over here in Indonesia. You guys are all awesome.

Agreed with the last few comments here.

This is an amazing city. Safe, open and relaxed.

Let's not let anyone take that away because of one crazy person.

In your eyes, how were they under prepared and how would you make changes to prevent this in the future?

I deeply disagree with you, so I just want to see the other side of things here that I'm having a very difficult time understanding. The openness, accessibility and freedom are the pillars of Canadian and Ottawa life. I never want that to change and I do not feel less safe in my city than I did yesterday at this time.

Police just took down a guy while Harper was laying a wreath at the war monument. I am sure it will turn out to be a misunderstanding, but jeepers, when you see someone with high security around a place where a tragic event just happened, keep your distance.

Here's a sobering photo that got tweeted - it compares how CNN's 24-hour news machine is over-dramatizing our tragedy, vs our own CBC's commendably professional coverage.

... CBC is awesome. Next time one of your neo-con friends tells you that the CBC needs to die, you remind them of today: the true value of a public broadcaster who is not beholden to ad dollars or sponsorship that might otherwise slant coverage.

If I'm not mistaken, the first calls to police were at 9:52am

Police were on scene at 9:55am.

That's remarkable response time.

The best way we as citizens can fight back against an event like this is to not let these radicals change the way we live our lives. I love that Canadians are friendly, welcoming and trustworthy. But at the same time, if you try to take that away from us, we'll stand together, shoulder to shoulder, and drop the gloves with any punk that tries to do us wrong.

From my office right now I can see hundreds of people standing around the War Memorial, paying their respects to our fallen soldier, and showing a front of unity to any would be wrong doers. Yes, you may take one of us down, but we're not afraid. We're not backing down. We're here. We'll always be here.
