I was confused as well but I understand now what the issue was.

Keefe's comments could be interpreted two ways. First is how everyone did, that our elite players didn't get the job done. Second way is that our elite players are overrated and not actually elite.

This is why his explanation is saying very clearly he meant they didn't produce (meaning he thinks they are elite players). The team internally feels the pressure for sure and I think this is not about the locker room, this is about trying not to give the fans and media anything right now. Didn't work if they didn't over react we aren't talking about this anymore
It should not have even been brought up to the media today.

Carry on like status quo and prove it on the ice going forward.

By doing what they did today they are giving this story an even longer shelf life.

This falls squarely on the shoulders of Shanny. Has anybody seen or heard from this guy lately ??

The guy is in hiding. He latched on to this experiment and went all in. Secretly though I bet in a tell all book it will eventually come out that Bell and Rogers etc were sold on Dubas and pushed for this path. Similar to the JFJ situation.

I would say (and strongly believe this needs to happen) they need to dump MM for at least 2 quality support players. This also assures players are aware they no one is safe if they do live up to their contracts. But they probably want to keep AM happy so MM is probably safe.

A little tired the Leafs having to nickle and dime players to fill the roster because you have 3 guys making 10+m each.

Keefe was the favourite coach to be fired first.
"The difference between us and Arizona is that we have elite players, Keefe said on Monday. “And our elite players didn’t play like elite players.”

I think you'd have to make quite a stretch to interpret that comment as anything other than your first interpretation.

Imagine the outrage if Keefe called them "mentally weak" like Gabby called his Canucks last night. Wonder if Gabby retracts his words or this leads to him being fired.

Bunkis is not pulling any punches. Wonder if he retracts his words tomorrow.

This interim coach has existed on this team for too long and the window for this core is closing. I don't think it is the right time to coach our coach.

I'd move MM but it would take at least 3 lottery protected picks/prospects. If you move Mitch, you have to be prepared to move Matty as well in which case, you are starting another rebuild. Perhaps the next President can learn from Shanny and Kyle's mistakes and get it right on attempt #2.

Sad reality is that you are probably right. I hate to say it but deep down kinda feel the same way and MM is absolutely the first to move on from.

I just watched the clip, not seeing what all the drama is.
I think the fact the coach is coming after the players twice in four games and neither the players or the coach went to defend one another in the media is a bit telling of the culture in the room. I'm actually with the players on this one. I actually don't think Keefe needed to call out anyone this early. Tavares, Nylander have been fine. Marner has been a bit slower but still PPG. Matthews has been a bit bad for his standards but is coming off a 60 goal season and he started slow last year. This is who we are. If anyone is to blame for the slow start it's Keefe for incorrect lineup formation and Dubas for the roster.

There is a 3rd interpretation. 2.5 lines on the team aren't very good.

Keefe's original criticism ?
Yeah that was dumb. Not seeing any issue with the clip I just watched.
Coach didn't need to explain himself but he isn't very bright. I don't see what the players said as anything alarming. I'm sure they discussed ltheir performance last game, why wouldn't they?

Sure talk about it behind closed doors. Poulin listed 4 possible reasons for Keefe coming out and explaining himself. All 4 were bad according to him. So why did he feel the need to explain himself?? It makes him look weak the same way he looked after losing to the Rangers last year and calling them soft and later taking it back.
