Keep in mind Dubas was apparently a superb GM who was being suppressed by Shanahan. Who is being manipulated by Larry Tanenbaum LOL
Exactly.

Keefe will be fired ~20ish games into the season a la Babcock 2019, atleast that's what I believe is a rational prediction.

We have the unconfirmed blocked trade and the unconfirmed calls to tell the core they won’t be traded. Anything else making it crystal clear?
Yeah that he wanted to extend Kyle dubas 5 yrs and was ready to offer the extension BEFORE the playoffs but Kyle waited….

Is the problem that he wanted to sigh him or that he didn’t do it early enough? Either way, we’re still a long ways away from it being “crystal clear” that Shanahan needs to go.

What’s the point?

What’s the good that Shanahan has done? What’s the argument for keeping him?

He is the architect of the soft penalty fest NHL and the soft Leafs. How many interviews does he need to do where he gushes about small skilled players before you believe him when he tells and shows you who he is repeatedly?

Simply look at the team and association when he started and compare it to today. It’s been an amazing turnaround.

If I thought he was actually meddling as much as some pretend he is, that may worry me.

Please please don’t bring him back. One thing though, if he does return , I’d love to see him show up at camp having dropped a ton of weight, to set a mood for the team. The soft cushy days are over, lean and mean. Walk the walk, seeing your coach balloon like that, it’s just a bad look in terms of self control and commitment. Set a tone. Okay, back to wanting him gone.

Dreger on Babcock returning to coach the Blue Jackets, if Keefe will get an extension and more - TSN.ca

TSN hockey insider Darren Dreger joins us to chat about if there is an extension in the works for Sheldon Keefe, Shane Doan's name being linked to the Maple Leafs' front office, if Patrick Roy will be behind an NHL bench soon, Mike Babcock returning to the NHL as to coach the Blue Jackets and more.
We are f***ing cursed
. If Keefe gets an extension
Finished done done done

Weren't we promised that Babcock would never coach again?
Could swear that was assured by many.

Would Patrick Roy make sense to replace Keefe behind Maple Leafs bench?

3:02 | June 5, 2023

NHL analyst Kris Versteeg joins the JD Bunkis Podcast to explain why he thinks Patrick Roy should replace Sheldon Keefe behind the bench in Toronto, and would be just the head coach that is needed to get the Maple Leafs over the hump.

His name is Pat, good enough reason for me.

Aside from that Versteeg did make some good points. The attitude Roy would bring especially is enticing. Leafs need more BDE across the franchise.

I don't think it's an accident that he waited to take another NHL job five seconds after his MLSE deal expires.
He would have gotten paid regardless.

My initial point was more that many said 'he would never coach again' because no one would hire him.

Kyper made a good point today: Either extend Keefe or fire him, because if he walks into the dressing room at training camp without an extension it tells the players the boss does not have faith in him so why should they?

The problem is if Treliving does extend him, he's stuck with him as it will get his career with the Leafs off to a pretty lame start if he extends then fires Keefe within the first year or two.

So let him walk seems to be the only play here, as long as there's another coach Treliving knows is available and interested who he considers an improvement. Otherwise, love it or hate it, Keefe is going to be the guy, and probably for awhile.

We haven't seen yet what it'll be like the bought-and-paid-for pro-Dubas Toronto hockey media start sniping at the new administration. Will they fall in line and soft ball the new people or go scorch and burn on people they perceive as the enemy?

Patrick Roy would be so entertaining and so different. He's unbelievably competitive and A type personality. My instincts are that the local media would campaign against a personality like him but maybe being a French Canadian in Toronto could allow him to pull it off at least for a few seasons.

Three things:

1) They like Keefe and want to see what he left in his tank this year without an extension and thus no announcement is necessary.

2) They are working on an extension with Keefe and an announcement is imminent.

3) They are interviewing other candidates.

They need access and quotes to get anybody looking at them so I expect they will fall in line as soon as they can. Talking about Kyle or Shanny vs Kyle is to generate clicks but its getting close to people not caring much any more. Most of the media will get on board first chance they get. Its be positive or starve, and they may not get a second chance if they are perceived as hostile to the new regime.

Roy left Colorado because he felt he didn't have enough say over player personnel decisions and that was with kind of VP title as well. Even if there is no substance at all to Shanny steering Dubas around that out front expectation would seem to require a huge amount of trust. FWIW I would be fine with him and I believe the coach should have substantial impact because its his game plan that has to be executed.
