With Kyle Dubas in Pittsburgh and ready for battle in the Eastern Conference with his old team, a heated new rivalry has just been born.

"One Leafs staffer you will likely not see surface in Pittsburgh is head coach Sheldon Keefe. Not only has Keefe received an endorsement from Shanahan, but the Fenway Sports Group has also made clear that their coach, Mike Sullivan, is central to their plans and he has a long-term contract.
Keefe has one year remaining on what’s believed to be a $2 million a season contract, which may be a factor for MLSE given they have developed an aversion to paying people not to work for them. (Mike Babcock, who is expected to resurface in Columbus as head coach, has been receiving roughly $6 million a season for nearly four years on a pact that finally expires in a few weeks.)
Treliving and Keefe are expected to meet in the coming weeks. The Leafs will have two options here. Either extend Keefe by a year or two and give him a vote of confidence, avoiding a lame-duck situation.
Or they could do something similar to what Shanahan did when he inherited Randy Carlyle as coach in 2014; add a new assistant coach, handpicked by management, to replace Spencer Carbery and assist a bench boss in the final year of a deal.
In that scenario, any bumps in the road and Keefe would be vulnerable in midseason, with either the new assistant or an outside candidate coming in to take over.
That’s a move that would give Treliving some in-season flexibility, while maintaining stability for the players and staff during what’s going to be a tumultuous time.
Flames associate coach Kirk Muller is one rumored candidate for that kind of “lurker” role, although he’s still under contract in Calgary and it’s unclear given their ongoing head coach search if he’ll be retained."
