Ah great. He will be back.
): That's what it could mean unless coming out of the discussion will be Shanny saying something like they are doing a review of the organization to decide what the next step would be. Like Maloney did in Calgary. They may be giving Kyle a chance to do the year end summary of what went wrong, and also a few days to come to Shanny with his proposal for getting a different result. He's a long term Leaf and deserves more than a bum's rush. I want his ass in Pittsburgh but even if they are moving him out it has to follow a process.

Sheldon Keefe

He’s still the Leafs coach, so it’s hard to even call him a candidate at this point. But with all that went down in Leafs-land on Friday, Keefe may be on the coaching market at some point in the near future.

Dubas leaving the Leafs means the GM who hired Keefe every step of the coach’s post-playing career — from Sault Ste. Marie in the OHL to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies to the Leafs — is gone.
Brendan Shanahan will bring in a new GM at some point and Keefe may find himself on the outs then.

Whether the Rangers job is still vacant at that time remains to be seen, but Keefe has a unique combination of progressive thinking and big-market NHL experience now. That could hold some appeal for the Rangers.

The tail is wagging the dog.

The Leafs are in need of a real NHL coach. One that knows how to handle multi-millionaire stars. These coach-killers seem to think they're the ones in control.

How many different coaches need to call them out before they finally get it?

Hockey is a "what have you done for me lately" sport. Unfortunately for Keefe, repeated record breaking regular season success means nothing. Not without playoffs accomplishments to accompany them.

It's like watching re-runs of Gilligan's Island.

Been there, done that.

Moving on.

One small but (to me anyway) weird choice by Keefe was his aversion to using Lafferty on the PK. You'd figure given Lafferty's speed and offensive acumen shorthanded he'd have been the ideal Mikheyev replacement on the PK unit and would've given the Leafs that offensive element they were missing this season. Leafs led the league in shorthanded goals in 21-22 but dropped to the middle of the pack this season. Mikheyev was a big reason for last years success and I just found it odd that he wouldn't even attempt to use Lafferty the same way. Keefe deployed McCabe as a Muzzin replacement but didn't go for a similar move with Lafferty for Mikheyev.

I think he should get one more chance under a new GM. Keefe does like a lot of things Dubas could never provide. Luke Schenn looked like our no.2 for example. That's mind boggling. His good play should have been well liked but still fell out of the top 3 at least.

Benching Holl but also giving him top 4 minutes was a cry for help and sign from Keefe that he hates his blue line but his hands are tied. It makes no sense otherwise.

Bruce Cassidy calls out his team for 24 giveaways after game 5. Didn't think his team could beat Arizona in January
Love it.

I guess coaching changes don't work in NHL. Cassidy and Maurice are in the finals

Keefe returning is worse than Dubas returning.
I guess Shanny totally fails to see that he's out-coached in every playoff series, his players never start on time, will shake up lines in during the season but refuses to (unless forced) in the playoffs, plays MM and AM ridiculous minutes even when they are totally under-performing and others are playing better..... this quote after game 1

"It was a step quicker than it was in the previous series, and that caught us." - Keefe on getting burned by the Panthers' speed

If all the Leafs did was fire Keefe and left everything else the same, I could find some happiness for next season. Now I have nothing to look forward to. I’m already upset about next season’s playoff failure.

How often does a new GM keep the previous regime? He has to make changes right?
Usually yes... but we are in a puppet GM for Shanny the good old country club man kind of situation.

It's funny bitching for years about keeping this stale ass core together, then turns out it's Shanahan who wants to keep the status quo. Is it too late to fire him into the sun?

I'll be very surprised if Keefe is the coach come September
Right now Shanny is playing the political card, saying all the right stuff

Keefe is a goner. Whoever the next GM is, going to have his hand on this team from the get go

Keeping Keefe as a lame duck during the next transition makes sense. This gives Treliving a year to find a new long term coach.
