Keeping Keefe as a lame duck during the next transition makes sense. This gives Treliving a year to find a new long term coach.
Most competent coaches have been hired already. Not sure. Why waste another year potentially? So they wait till the Leafs lose in 1st or 2nd round in 2024 and then fire him? What a waste of time. Why not just go for it now? Hire an actual competent coach.

Maybe everything depends on AM34 / MM16 extension. If there is no extension, it should be a rebuilding team soon. Keeping Keefe is not a bad idea for the lean years. Not sure. Keeping our coach, means the failure this year was all on Dubas. Being happy with Keefe means you think that he got all he could out of this roster. That he was the best we could get for motivation, strategy and gamenship. Best roster in 20 years, and he admits he didn't have them ready for the second round. All this means that we are giving the president one more free year. that the new GM gets one year then he will have to fire coach..Out of Dubas, Shanny and Keefe
Dubas was the only one passable and with some promising moves
Shanny is a clown and does nothing but take credit
Keefe is not ready to coach this team in the playoffs. We cant win with him
Yea I believe so, Q and teams have likely reached out for permission but I am assuming waiting for Playoffs is more important.Coach Q not eligible to return until after July 1 we're led to believe right, after some kind of drinking contest with Bettman if I recall?
Holding pattern?
They seemed to have tuned him out anyway. Another reason for core changes - everything else has been triedI suppose an argument for keeping Sheldon Keefe is maintaining some form of continuity, particularly if the players with contract negotiations on the horizon prefer Keefe as their coach or do not want the uncertainty of who they will be taking marching orders from to start next season. It's also possible there are no attractive alternatives on the market.
But it would be bizarre, to me, when you look at last year's performance. Keefe's tinkering with the lines and inability to rouse this team in the playoffs to meet the moment, versus the general manager we just sent out the door who, while you may not like his total body of work, made a number of objectively reasonable deadline additions this year to give this team a chance. If there's a cog in that formula I'm looking to swap out, it's probably the head coach.
Things happen in the summer. Things happen in the season where coaching is concerned. I don’t see it as the highest Pripyat the moment. Certainly getting Matthews locked up and just what kind of team Treliving starts to build around him is the priority. If this was last year we would have been able to scoop up Cassidy. But alas.
