How many people can realistically be in the running for the Calder?
For D, Pinto and Powers are probably neck and neck, playing 21+ mins a night while generating offense and playing a sound defensive game will get you there. I can't see Powers not being in the conversation and Sanderson has been right there with him in terms of performance
Beniers is the obvious frontrunner, so that's three guys already.
But then you have MacTavish and Maccelli outproducing the rest of the field, and Whyatt Johnston leading in goals while also outproducing Pinto, and I just don't see how Pinto gets more than a handful of votes at best. There's 6 guys that have better narratives going for them, which two do you put him ahead of to even get a 5th place vote?
They name 3 for the award show so it will be interesting how this ends up, Wyatt Johnson has 20 goals leading all rookies, with Berniers with 19 goals & Pinto with 18 goals. However, Berniers leads all rookies in points with 49, McTavish is 2nd & Macelli 3rd & Pinto isn't catching them. Powers & Sanderson are tied with 28 pts each on defence. My guess is Berniers wins the Calder award with McTavish 2nd & one of Powers or Sanderson 3rd.
Buffalo have three rookies in the top 15 which shows you how well that franchise is doing & Ottawa has two. You're right, Pinto is in tough & if I had to pick between Pinto & Sanderson right now I think we would have to go with Sanderson who has been so good this yr, pts aside. The ranking is probably based on a combination of pts, goals, overall play, importance to team, minutes & probably a number of other things.
That 2020 draft with Stutzle, Sanderson, Greig, Jarventie, Kleven, Sokolov, Merilainen, Engstrand, Daoust & Reinhardt could be the best draft ever. At this point only Engstrand seems to be the only guy who hasn't played for either Ottawa or Belleville at this point, that's assuming that Kleven & Merilainen will sign with Ottawa soon. That's pretty incredible for a GM & scouting staff who are so maligned on here.
