Someone should DM Capfriendly and ask if there is anything stopping both sides from signing an extension right away. Technically, he is in the last year of this contract and it is after January 1st.

I am not sure if his QO was technically still on the table.

Another thing that would be interesting to know is how his cap will be calculated. Given that he wasn't paid for the first 41 games, was a 10.2(c) RFA, and the Senators weren't trying to game the cap by waiting to sign him, I wonder if they have any sort of agreement or mechanism for his cap hit to not be doubled. Meaning, the Sens can send down another 775k player and that makes room for Pinto.
It wasn't technically a QO, those expire a week or two after they are issued. His QO would have been over 800k had it still been an option

In terms of an immediate extension, bare minimum he'd have to wait until this one is registered with the league, I can't see any reason why he couldn't extend after that though.

His daily cap hit is just his salary divided by work days, times the number of days he's on the roster, so 775/186 x however many days are left this season (about 90 I think). Cap friendly already confirmed this part and there are similar situations as examples that have been brought up in the past (Athanasiou in 2017 for example).

We all said the same about Norris being our 1C for the next century after the 35 goals season

Please wait and see how he does
Well, Pinto wouldn’t get an 8x8.

But anyway, there’s no need to go 8 years here. The Sens offered five and six year deals which I think is the better number for a long-term deal. I’d be fine with that assuming it lands at 5-6 million, it’s a good gamble because centres get very expensive very quickly if they do break out.

Not feeling an extension quite yet. He will have that adrenaline start but crash down to Earth, much like Norris did. I would prefer evaluating a deal in the off season. Let's not fall in love with our youg players and made good, sound hockey decisions

You'll never get him cheaper than now on a long term deal, but certainly would be a risky play as you suggest.

Before he got the shoulder injury (and Norris had that amazing season), I thought Pinto was going to push Norris for the #1 center spot. I do believe we have a gem, I'm also not as down on Norris as some are, he's coming off missing a whole season and training camp, this year was always going to be a rough one for him.

Next year, I suspect we'll see the real Norris, and the real Pinto, and our center depth will be really tough for teams to handle.

Sign him to term.

If Norris and/or chabot rebound, deal them when their value goes back up.

Welcome back Shane, no pressure. Only expecting you to turn the season and the fortunes of a desperate franchise around by the end of the 1st period.

Good luck I’ll be cheering for you

If Norris returns to form I’d rather just keep him, same for Chabot really, unless we still somehow suck.

It’s a nice luxury to have four good top 9 centres. When one gets injured we can just move whoever is at wing back to centre and it makes it 10x easier to manage injuries. Considering we’ve been losing some of our centres for full seasons or half seasons every year, I’d hate to mess with the depth.

Never thought I’d say this but he may replace Mike Fisher as the most “combination most handsome and polite respectful 2nd/3rd line center in Sens history”.

Pinto winning the “CMHAR23LCISH” award is like someone breaking Gretzky’s 92 goal season mark. Nobody ever thought they’d see another Mike Fisher.

Nobody is as handsome as Mike Fisher

Missing that is a big impact. And for Pinto I have limited expectations for the rest of the season with him being out for so long. Likely there will be an adrenaline fueled pop in his step for a game or 2 and then it will settle in. His hockey IQ is very high though, and that will help.

I've seen too many games off from Norris and Chabot. Not the right attitude for this team. If they light it up at some point in the future, sell high and move on.

This is great.

Just need to send someone down to fit him no?

Could even waive Kubalik...

Not to single you out but the whole narrative on Norris is pure crap. It’s his 1st season back from a major shoulder injury.

I bet the Bruins are happy they held onto Patrice Bergeron the year he had by far the worst season of his career after missing almost a full season with a major shoulder injury at 23 years old.

Someone will need to go down.
I'd have no issues waiving Kubalik. I wonder if that would help or hinder a trade.
McKewen is another option. I'd keep Charts up.

I've been saying this about Norris for years.

He scores and he's great when he's on, but he's not the most dynamic player out there.

His contract was widely seen as an overpay when we signed it by a lot of people and i still think it is.

At his salary I want a guy that you can consistently count on to contribute in some form in almost every game.

Sogaard was cast in a similar light by some.

Edit.

Forsberg on LTIR should give us enough room for now. Sogaard + Pinto are less than his contract.

Absolutely. Missed a year of nhl hockey. Had to rehab. Came back, had to get back to nhl form, nevermind catch up to the other players.

That's a long, arduous road.

What did you think of his game pre injury? Goal wise hes been pretty excellent, but i still found that he could disappear for stretches
