Pinto aint winning the Calder unless Norris or Stutzle are out longterm. Which hopefully they aren't, it is in our best interest they stay healthy as well for Pinto to get a cheap bridge.

How are Norris and Stu competing for Calder? Or do you mean he can't win Calder playing with Joseph and Motte/Formenton?

i think he means itll be hard to win playing behind Norris and Timmy. Getting 3rd line minutes isnt bad, but some of his competition are going to get more opportunities being on a weaker team. playing on pp1 and what not. pinto wont have that luxury most likely.

- Pinto & Sanderson on a Calder run
- Pinto is on PP 1b & should get plenty of pts along with Sanderson on the PP
- is already good enough to fill in on the top two lines at centre or RW.
- can replace & do exactly what Giroux is doing on the 2nd line
- can be signed long term before Giroux contract ends & take that money
- has size, skill, high IQ, vision & #1 centre potential, he'll be a star
- I expect all 4 UND alumni to play for Ott next yr & all eventually be stars on this team

I don't see Pinto as a Norris replacement in any way, we signed Norris for 8 yrs. Both are very good & this team needs both at centre where they excel as two way centres. If they can re-sign Debrincat than they only need to do something for next yr with Pinto & then sign Pinto long term & give him Giroux money when Giroux retires.

True but he will be on PP2 with #28 and #12 and that could give him more opportunities. Who knows how the season will go.

Played around with Capfriendly again.

Under such a plan i.e re-signing Zub and Debrincat(and dumping Zaitsev) we can fit in Pinto at a bridge around 4 mil. If he absolutely explodes and requires more, we COULD trade Joseph for more cap space(tho I'd hate to do so just 1 year into a 4 year contract).

Better hope the cap goes up significantly if we want to keep Sanderson and Debrincat.

No problemo.

1. The cap is projected to up by 3-4 mil in 2024-2025.
2. We got around 5 mil in buyouts/retained cap coming off the books in 2024-2025.

As for the cap, it's not a terrible problem to have.

If we have to unload a star for a boatload of futures it will just help ensure we have more cheap stars waiting in the wings.

So who do you see as the two power-play lines?

From what I saw in the preseason and what it looks like so far based on the practice lines, interviews, radio chatter etc. this is what I think we start with:

PP1 Stu, Chuky, Bath, Norris and Chabot
PP2 Cat, Giroux, Pinto, Sanderson, XXX (the last player could be Brassard if he makes the team, Formenton if signed, Joseph or Motte, although we might go with 2D on this PP and have Branstrom join in, I personally would probably like that, at least to try it). Either way Pinot is guaranteed PP time this year.

Norris on pace for 40 goals last year and had like 45 in last 90 something games played.

If he steals anything, it'll be in a year or two minimum.
Losing all of last season really sucks but going into last year Pinto appeared to be ahead of Norris at the same age imo. Norris took a huge step though so while it's not fair to expect the same progression from Pinto it is evidence that things can change in the blink of an eye.

I think it's far more likely Branntsrom is on the 2nd pp than Sanderson. At this point. I don't really see a big difference in either unit. Feels like Joseph is the natural fit for the last spot.

I don't think it's long before these get mixed up though. Debrincat/Giroux will end up on a pp with Stutzle and Norris at some point.

Where?

Also how sad is it that when we have 2 legit Calder options they may steal enough votes from each other to ensure neither win.

Could they both make the final 3?!

Who is odds on favourite at the moment?
I went on Sports Interaction as the odds were better than B365 last week, and those are the two I have accounts on. Sandy is favourite over Pinto, but both of them are well down the bookie lists.

You have to think if a defenseman gets it, the media will vote for Owen Power (unless he really bombs). Pinto should have a good shot - if he gets a decent amount of icetime.

People like pts, I think Pinto ends up slightly ahead of Sanderson in the Calder race, but both are going to end up as great NHL players regardless if they win this thing or not.

Kastelic is another really good young player who is going to really help this team in future as well in the physicality department & more importantly in the faceoff circle.

If Pinto is deployed in more defensive positions to develop as a shut down guy, it might reduce his production and make it easier to keep whatever his next deal is low. I'm loving what I see from him, but his biggest strength so far for me is his IQ, which we'll need on the defensive end.

I hope DJ lets him play a steady shut down game with Motte and Joseph, the offense will eventually come.
