The NHL is right to suspend him.

But the NHL, and other leagues, should absolutely be pilloried for getting themselves so much in bed with sports gambling. Sports advertising has gotten so degenerately synonymous with sportsbooks that loads of times I don't feel comfortable letting my kid watch.

Don't rely your revenue streams on something so clearly egregious that you obviously can't allow your personnel to be involved with.

Edit: and if he was suspended for betting on other sports, then I retract my first part of my post. If that degeneracy is legal and doesn't impact your sport, don't punish a guy for using the services of your corporate partner.

I assume Pinto probably doesn't play this year

I guess Dorion won the battle but lost the war.

You're leaving the door open to ton of shady things that could be going on other than personally throwing games. Use your imagination

Guess we'll see once the curtain's pulled all the way back.

If that ever happens, anyway.

I just get a kick out of these pro leagues throwing hissy fits over their players betting on sports.

Every other commercial during these games is for another damn sports betting app. Intermission reports, parlays, in-game betting features, it's rampant. Oh but when a player takes part?

"Sacriledge! How dare he?! Get him!" :biglaugh:

I'm rarely on the outrage culture train so maybe someone can elaborate:

If he's betting on NHL games that his team is playing in, I could see why you can't do that.

If he placed a bet on opening night between Chicago and Pittsburgh...I mean, who cares? I don't. I could MAYBE see a conspiracy to place bets based on non-public insider information like "Hey, McDavid has a UBI and will be a late HS" so you place your bet against Edmonton. I could see that.

Why would it be frowned upon to be on non-NHL games?

lol It's like when the NHL suspended Austin Watson for alcoholism.
Meanwhile Bridgestone Arena is splattered with alcohol commercials including the Budlight Fan Zone.
that is 1 aspect that could be at play, maybe Pinto is in the midst of a gambling addiction. He violated a rule and they saw an opportunity to get the kid the help he needs.

What is the sports betting violation?

Would it be betting on your own games or any NHL game?

Pinto would have been better off getting drunk, driving into a Tim Hortons, and fleeing the scene than betting $50 that Ovechkin would go 2 games in a row without getting a shot.

Well sure... but imagine he bet $50 that Ovechkin would go 2 games in a row without getting a shot and then 14 shots a couple of games later. Dude would've made McDavid money in only a few days

Happening more in the world of footie as well. Only going to get worse with the access and money going into advertising gambling sites.

1. Don't place a wager at work, it's not that hard.
2. 41 games is way too harsh for someone who violated rules but did not bet on hockey. I think 25 games is more appropriate for something like this.
It's not about what's "fair" it's about making sure the millions (billion?) of dollars that the league is making from gambling is not compromised in any way. It's kind of ridiculous but makes sense when you realize this whole league is just a big attention suck for the purpose of showing you ads / getting you to gamble / buy tickets and merchandise.

Why do you say that? 41 games is 41 games?

He won't be immediately re-instated after 41 games. Also, he still doesn't have a contract.

Pinto won’t be eligible to play until Jan. 21 against the Philadelphia Flyers, but there’s no way he’ll be ready to suit up in that game. Pinto will have to spend time with the club’s AHL affiliate in Belleville before he can even think about returning to the NHL.
