Shane Pinto being suspended 41 games for sports gambling

Exhibit 14.2 of the NHL’s collective-bargaining agreement states: “Gambling on any NHL Game is prohibited.” The league’s constitution allows gambling on other sports.
That's weird. Seems like the one piece of info we have so far is that he did NOT bet on NHL games

It says this has come to light in the last few weeks, but the NHL season is just 2 weeks old. Maybe this was from last season/playoffs?

Can you even bet on pre-season games?

if he wasn't betting on hockey then this suspension is wrong, if he was an RFA at the time of the bets its even more wrong, however if he was betting on hockey while under an NHL contract then he is in the wrong.

These suspensions make no sense to me, is it that hard for these guys to shoot their friend or wife some money to throw down their parlays for them?
Maybe it's hard to avoid that being traced back to them. Ivan Toney got caught doing that.

So he has to be signed to a contract before being able to server his suspension...

Here's an easy trade opportunity for a tanking team. Get a free, slighly used Pinto.
As a Sens fan, I'd much rather keep him, and add a player in January who scored 20 last year for a pro-rated $875,000. He won't have much leverage next season either for his next contract.

Who knows he could've done that and then pissed said friend/wife/girlfriend off

I.E. Evander and Anna Kane, although he was cleared of any wrong doing, but the threat still came out

Just to highlight the sportsnet article:

Critically, the league did not accuse of Pinto of wagering on NHL games, as a memo sent in March 2022 reminded all league and club personnel — including players — that wagering on any NHL game, even where legal, is “absolutely prohibited,” and will “constitute conduct that is dishonourable, prejudicial to, or against the welfare of the League or the game of hockey” under the NHL’s constitution.

Doesn't seem to matter.....gambling of ANY kind is frowned upon when it comes to pro athletes.

Look at the NFL, kicking out players for entire seasons. :help:

Unless there's proof that Pinto bet against the Sens and then sabotaged games with his own play, I don't see the problem with what he's accused to have done.

I think what the leagues as a whole want to prevent though is guys convincing their buddies on other teams to throw a game.

Hence the harsh penalties.

Part of the appeal seems to be if you lose you can keep it to yourself and if you win you can brag about it.

We don't know what he's actually accused of at this point, so I don't know how you don't see a problem with it.

The issue is there was there seems to be a rule that he broke and he got caught. That's really the end of the discussion. I don't get why so many people don't understand that in various issues around the sports world and real world

Is there a difference between wagering on a game and wagering on say Brady Tkachuk's over-under for hits in a game?

Either way, complete hypocrisy for the league to promote gambling, encourage gambling addiction, take money from gambling orgs and condemn someone for doing it. Disgraceful as usual.

We don't even know if he was betting on hockey or not, do we?

NFL suspended guys for betting on college football while in a hotel on a road trip. Betting on the game itself wasn't an issue, but betting at what was deemed a team facility was.
I'm assuming, based on the 41 games. If it was just a random college football game or something, then I'd 100% be on his side and say that any suspension is ridiculous.
