How does the league even find out about this stuff lol

Are they in bed with Big Brother and always have eyes on Pinto's bank account, monitoring every transaction??

I'm pretty sure bets like that are limited to very low dollar amounts, because yeah, it's way too easy for information to get out about what color Katy Perry's hair is going to be.

They acknowledge insider info is bad for those, but it's too easy for it to get out. They make rules against NHL players betting on sports for the more direct sports bets they can influence
There's absolutely no suggestion whatsoever that Pinto had influence on a sports outcome. This was explicitly not NHL game-related wagering, per the NHL.

Would a bet that Andlauer was going to become the next owner -- made in May -- been open to such a large sum that it was flagged by the betting company?

Whatever, I guess Seravelli's new information today suggests that the whole story will emerge eventually. It probably will be something boring. Gambling, basically, remains a bad thing but the NHL is a money-making enterprise

Do you blame Molson sponsorships for NHLers becoming alcoholics? What is this new wave of absolving people of their personal responsibilities?

It doesn’t matter who the NHL gets sponsorship money from, people make their own decisions.

Stop making excuses for people making terrible personal decisions.

First of all, I don't think that's a good comparison because 1.....

This would approach being a point if Ron and the rest of the panel had 5 minute long segments on how to play drinking games with the sponsored liquor and Gary told the refs to force games to OT with game management penalties so people would have time to buy more beers.

And 2, the league isn't suspending players for half a season when getting caught drinking during the summer

I'm not defending Pinto - rules are rules.

However, I wonder if Gary "The Fans Love the Digital Boards Ads" Bettman gets the irony in stinging this guy with a half season suspension for gambling.

If I was his lawyer I'd be saying you know young Mr. Pinto has a compulsive personality to begin with. After watching an endless stream of Frozen Frenzy and seeing many many many ads promoting gambling, there was a +400 line on Connor Bedard taking a shit before the Hawks returned to the 3rd period in last night's game with Boston. Mr. Pinto buckled and entered "yes, I believe a shit is going to happen". He feels badly but the NHL and ESPN ground him down.
He's free to bet on any other sports.

Well, if the NHL starts suspending players for drinking beer, Molson sponsorship will be questioned I suppose.

Sounds like the sportsbook flagged it. It must have been a large enough transaction to trigger further investigation.

But again.... note the logo on the helmet that Shane Pinto has to wear as a member of the Ottawa Senators

Once again, what did the league think was going to happen by doing this?

Why are people saying it's too harsh?

It's more lenient than the NFL's policy which is a full year for betting on the NFL, and indefinite suspension (minnimum of 1 year) for inside info/tipping, or third party and proxy betting.

MLB has minimum 1 year but upto permanent suspensions if your team is involved.

All players know you can't bet on the NHL. Onus is on Pinto

Risking your pro athlete salary and all possible future earnings to make a bet or provide info for someone else to make a bet just seems like an incredibly stupid thing to do. What are they teaching these kids at the University of North Dakota?

I suspect this won't be the last controversy we see this year with pro sports and gambling. I'd even bet on it.

Sportradar. They track all public betting for integrity. NHL signed a 10 year deal with them in 2021.

It's a blip on the radar, NFL's suspended like a dozen players in the past year.

can't help but think about myself. kind of amusing how i've seen this betting stuff creeping in the same way it crept into esports and now we get to see the downsides of working with these "legitimate businessmen". ticking timebomb.

Personally I am fine with the ads. I don't think during the part where analysts talk should be allowed to discuss the betting odds etc. I also do not think sports teams should legally be allowed to take money from betting sponsors similar to players.

Strictly ad based. Make an ad let it run 20 seconds. That is it.

But seriously, what the f*** did the league think would happen when they put a team in Las Vegas and openly embrace gambling, from board and jersey ads to in game promotions to a casino owning the regional broadcasting rights to more than half the league.

Had nothing to do with vegas having a team or not. The moment the US courts left it up to the stats to decide to allow sports better or not there would be issues with players betting.

It seems harsh because the league said he didn't bet on the NHL, unlike what people are posting. If they would follow up to just say, hey he texted his Dad with a request to put $1000 on Buffalo one night because Casey Mittelstadt had a frenulum infection that only he knew about... that would make more sense.

If they want to say, he bet on what coach would get fired, or who would buy the Sens, that too would make sense. Stupid -- but those are the rules.

These sports betting companies and advertising is becoming too much but that’s a different story. Maybe all this advertising is welcoming addiction to the youth that watch your game, including the players. Rules are rules but there’s an underlying issue

This.

Professional sports leagues can’t have it both ways. The greed these leagues brazenly display would be shocking if we haven’t seen it on display so many times before.

What did they think would happen?

Probably that players would be tempted to make bets. And it would look very bad if a player did that. So they put rules in place against it. And they caught a player for breaking those rules. So they punished him for it.

Gambling is just as addictive or more than smoking, and it's been banned in public, and anti-smoking ads, and a ton of barriers to get cigarettes.

But hey, let's make gambling easier than ever, make friendly apps so a moron can just tap and bet and blast ads every minute so they can gamble every hour of every day!!

Why can't they have it both ways? Even if it is hypocritical, which I disagree with, its still logical and legal to allow fans to bet on games while forbidding their employees in order to ensure the integrity of the game

You don't put a wolf in a hen house and then blame the canine when some of the chickens are dead in the morning.

17 different gambling commercials every commercial break

Player gets suspended for gambling
(GASP)
i dont like the gambling commercials and info-sessions either!!..

but theres still commercials and advertisers in the NHL for alcohol so its hard for me to hate on gambling ads too much
