Were sports books taking bets on who the new owner of the Senators would be back in May? Or were they taking bets on the performance of, say, a brother of a guy who knew a guy?
You definitely could place bets on who the new owner was. I think Ryan Reynolds was actually the favorites.

I don't doubt that some sportsbooks were taking bets on the new owner.

But regardless, if the NHL's gambling policy is similar to other leagues, players are not allowed to bet on anything related to the NHL at all, point blank. If he's feeding the bets through a 3rd party, or giving inside information to a 3rd party, it's still no bueno.

Blown out of proportion if it isn't NHL games. I get they have a policy but 41 games seems stiff.

Edit: inside info on ownership? LOL How much money are we talking about? That prop likely has a $ limit.

Slick move by management

Gives me the impression they might have had a hand in this coming to light
It's fairly obvious now why OTT was in no rush to sign Pinto, and didn't leave any room to sign him either.

It's pretty obviously related to NHL activity.

SOrry, if people posted in a more concise, informative manner, I would have noticed on 1st page. I caught it later.

I can't dismiss the "betting on new ownership" theory entirely, but again -- why is the NHL partnering with entities that put them in a position like this? Why does "Shane Pinto" have access to material, non-public information regarding a billion dollar transaction? And how much would he have had to wager for this to trigger an investigation?

Pro sports is one big monetary hilarious joke imo on this issue. You are literally plastered with wall to wall sports betting ads during any sports event. And then the sports leagues feel they have to take a hard line on betting within the league.

Sooner or later within all major leagues there will be payola scandals with players and refs influencing results. It is inevitable.

Probably because he was a pending RFA looking for a long term deal during the sales process and his agent could have easily been told something along the lines of “no long term deals can be done until the sale of the team to x is completed”

Well, if it were phrased like that, heads must roll. The agent could be in for sanction as well, no?

Can someone say which legal gambling site takes bets on events like "who is going to buy the Ottawa Senators"? Could a person put money right now on who the next GM is going to be? Not you, Shane.

But seriously, what the f*** did the league think would happen when they put a team in Las Vegas and openly embrace gambling, from board and jersey ads to in game promotions to a casino owning the regional broadcasting rights to more than half the league.

Do you blame Molson sponsorships for NHLers becoming alcoholics? What is this new wave of absolving people of their personal responsibilities?

It doesn’t matter who the NHL gets sponsorship money from, people make their own decisions.

Stop making excuses for people making terrible personal decisions.

You can bet on literally anything now. Are low level event staff at the Super Bowl sanctioned if they tell someone the anthem singer came in at under 2:12 for their anthem practice since you can bet on that?

So he gave insider info to a friend. I bet it was about who the new owner would be since apparently he wasn't betting on games.

Holy f*** does the betting industry have their shit together. It would be fascinating to find out how the bookmaking industry map out betting partners for insiders.

I'm not defending Pinto - rules are rules.

However, I wonder if Gary "The Fans Love the Digital Boards Ads" Bettman gets the irony in stinging this guy with a half season suspension for gambling.

If I was his lawyer I'd be saying you know young Mr. Pinto has a compulsive personality to begin with. After watching an endless stream of Frozen Frenzy and seeing many many many ads promoting gambling, there was a +400 line on Connor Bedard taking a shit before the Hawks returned to the 3rd period in last night's game with Boston. Mr. Pinto buckled and entered "yes, I believe a shit is going to happen". He feels badly but the NHL and ESPN ground him down.

This would approach being a point if Ron and the rest of the panel had 5 minute long segments on how to play drinking games with the sponsored liquor and Gary told the refs to force games to OT with game management penalties so people would have time to buy more beers.

I'm pretty sure bets like that are limited to very low dollar amounts, because yeah, it's way too easy for information to get out about what color Katy Perry's hair is going to be.

They acknowledge insider info is bad for those, but it's too easy for it to get out. They make rules against NHL players betting on sports for the more direct sports bets they can influence
