Bad in what sense? The bookies literally set their lines using insider info. As a hockey fan I'm all for someone using insider info against the bookies.

Now if he were out there sandbagging and making money off the Sens losing, that would be bad. Really bad.

The insider info is only bad in the eyes of the bookies, who will complain to the NHL, and the NHL will jump through whatever hoops needed because of how much money the bookies spend on NHL advertising
Its bad in my eyes for purely selfish reasons. As a Leaf fan I need the cap to rise and the revenue from gambling is essential, so naturally I am against anything that puts that revenue in jeopardy.

It would help if we knew what the rule Pinto is being punished for breaking. Fans care about why players are suspended half a season.

If it wasn’t betting on NHL games, then what was it? What else isn’t allowed?

A three sentence explanation and then saying “the matter is closed, no more comments” isn’t going to work here. All this will lead to is endless speculation and rumors.

And the hypocrisy of endlessly shilling for sports books during games doesn’t help here.

They can’t say why because there’s potentially a legal matter going on. Also the “hypocrisy” argument is hilarious to me. Is my workplace hypocritical because they serve alcohol but don’t allow employees to drink on the job? People throwing everything they can out there regardless if it makes sense or not to absolve a grown man of having to take any accountability is super cringeworthy

A legal investigation for what? Where do you see that info?

This should be yet another warning to all the major sports leagues, these are easy to explain away with the justified "college, NFL, NBA games" defense, but eventually one of these athletes is going to be caught betting on his own sport (bad) or his own games (catastrophe).

I've been doing this semi-professionally for a dozen years, it went from being taboo to discuss it in any way, to having the live odds posted regularly on the broadcasts. It's just mind boggling the 180 it did. And someone else already mentioned the recovering gambling addict thing for fans watching, but I can guarantee there are many players in the league that are either currently gambling addicts or recovering ones, and now you are dealing with sports books being major sponsors of your employer, it's just a bad look.

The sports books have a right to exist, the leagues were wrong in fighting gambling for so many years, but now they are wrong in embracing it so much.

You know the messed up thing is the guy was involved in the decision. So he obviously did something wrong.

I don’t see how this matters outside of betting on NHL games but maybe in his ignorant… can someone rationalize the logic?
Check the fine print on the statement;
He did not bet on “any NHL games”.

All they are technically claiming is he didn’t bet the outcome of any specific game/s. He wasn’t playing Sens moneylines.

He very likely bet on an NHL futures market.
Re; Team X to make playoffs or win division ect.
Re; season long player prop market
Or any of the million betting options widely offered.

I am thinking Pinto was passing inside info related to the sens to a 3rd party who would then make the bets and Shane would get a cut.
I mean if he were really doing that, wouldn't the league come down on him harder than just 41 games? 41 games seems way too lenient if his activities involved NHL games at all even if he wasn't the one making the actual bets. Plus didn't one of the betting sites/apps flag his account? Sounds like he was placing bets himself.

Poor choice of words on my part but certainly seems to be a component here

I find that very interesting, appreciate you posting the tweet.

I'm gunna have to do some research, I don't know what kind of laws are in place that would make something of this nature illegal.

Sorry if this was brought up previously, but would this have any effect on the pro-rated effects of signing a contract near or at the end of his suspension? It was posted a while back that as the days go by his 23-24' AAV rises, so if he were to sign a contract in February, would his AAV be incredibly high?

This is all assuming he signs at all, of course.

Are you sure that the environment will help him heal and learn from this mistake. I think the way the team has treated him likely drove him to being distressed and then making bad decisions. Poor guy would be best off in Vancouver. But we can be paying too much for a distressed asset and he needs time to work on himself and self reflect.
The investigation began in the summer, meaning his bad decisions were last season.

Also: From Friedman's article on Sportsnet.ca...

"The next question is how the Senators will handle the situation. It’s believed that one reason Pinto has not asked for a trade is that he appreciates the organization’s secrecy about the investigation."

The timing of this is incredibly shady. The only unsigned RFA gets hit with a gambling suspension while his team is in cap hell unable to sign him? Now he gets suspended and they can get him for his QO?

One helluva lucky coincidence for the Sens
Considering Pinto and the NHLPA negotiated the settlement for punishment, and nobody will be appealing, it’s fair to scrap that logic.

LOL. Right. The league really are fools. They think they are going to make a statement like that and now it's all going to just blow over? What a bunch of clowns. This doesn't go away until the public knows what exactly happened.
If the NHL were hiding something then Pinto, the Senators, and NHLPA are absolutely free to scream from the rooftops what really happened and that they are being treated unfairly.

In all likelihood, the NHL is doing Pinto a favor by airing his dirty laundry out in public as little as possible
