Said basically that if that's the case, Chicago retained half the salary in the initial trade, so his hit is 4.625m right now, but would be ~2.3m come TDL.

Basically said, IF, he expects there to be a line-up of teams, and listed the Jets along with the other contenders as potentially being interested in him as pure rental --- knowing full well they won't sign him come the off-season.

It's purely speculative. Just feels like a potential massive tide that will shape the outcome of the TDL.

I can't even imagine the price of him as a pure rental carrying a 2.3M cap hit.

Would generate quite the bidding war, you'd have to imagine.

Friedman is a joke ... he has never got any story correct about the Jets.
He does no work trying to find inside scoops anymore ... he just takes it from other reports or his buddies as soon as the story is released he reports it right away so looks like he is on top of the story.
I love how he tries to start a rumor ... pauses between sentences to make you think he knows what's happening but can't announce it until it's confirmed which it's never done because it's a BS story.
Can someone tell me a trade rumor he started that actually happened?

I just listened to it and no where did Friedman say he heard those teams would be in on Rantanan, just that you would THINK the contenders WOULD be if the Canes area going to retain half and bring that cap hit to like $2.3 M. And he's right. If the Jets could get Rantanan as a rental at that hit and depending on the price to the Canes, they damn well better look into it.

Okay, back to our regularly scheduled trade speculation.

Some stories I'll be looking for:

1) The Jets are buyers, but are they shopping in the high-end market? My guess is that Chevy's prepared to spend plenty of futures capital to add a top F and maybe a solid D, but will there be anyone available to the Jets for a trade? I'm not so sure. If not, I think he'll add a couple or more good depth pieces; at least one F and one D.

In regards to #1 I remember hearing Dallas wanted to be aggressive heading into the 22-23 TD but the value in the market just wasn’t there so they ended up settling for Max Domi for a 2nd and Khudobin. Hopefully Chevy finds a deal he is comfortable with. We were really aggressive last TD and we got clown pounded in the 1st round so actively doesn’t always = results. Not sure how it will play out.

As an example, Hayes was a well-regarded C but he was sluggish and not a good fit for the Jets' roster and system. Similarly, Toffoli was seen as a strong acquisition to strengthen RW but his style was a bad fit for the Jets, especially since they had gone with a somewhat slow Monahan at 2C. Together they struggled with pace, which is what the Jets' system is based on. They were fine in the regular season but a lot of teams had eased up on the throttle down the stretch.

For this season, Chevy has to get a good fit if he's going to displace roster players. I think that means a fast F (preferably with some size and finishing ability) to play on the secondary scoring line. On D they need a big D that is more mobile and faster with puck movement than Stanley.

There's no point bringing in players to displace current roster players if they don't fit the system and roster needs.

Chevy has mentioned this a few times in recent interviews (getting the right fit), so maybe he's recognized this issue.

Good point. There might not be that much supply this year. It could be the reason we haven't seen that many deadline type deals yet.

Exactly right with the observation about the critical importance of fit. Look firstly at what style of hockey the line plays and then target individual upgrades or improvements with that firmly in mind.

I surely hope your right that Chevy has picked up on this but "the proof of the pudding will be in the eating" as the old saying goes. As an aside, it`s pretty clear that many posters on here would benefit from giving this some deeper thought before throwing out all these potential trade possibiities.

While I think that the team is an F and a D-man away from a Stanley Cup final, I'd be worried about team chemistry if trades are made. Right now, the team's right up there with the totally surprising Caps and the chemistry seems very good. I realize that playoff hockey is "different" (not as many PP opportunities and much tighter checking), but I'd be tempted to maintain the status quo. It with be an interesting couple of weeks.

He benefited a lot playing with MacKinnon and Makar, but even this season on the Avalanche he just seemed off. Avalanche fans on their board complained a lot about his inability to drive play on his own.

Carolina isn’t going to give him away for peanuts and magic beans after dealing Necas to get him.

9 team NTC. I guarantee Winnipeg is one of those 9 teams. If you put up a trade board without NTCs there's not a lot on the table right now, unless there's a surprise somewhere.

If Carolina trades Rantanen they are hooped. Not getting a Necas quality player back.

I was just going to say something like that. His play since joining the Hurricans should be pretty worrying. I'd be very concerned that he'd buy in if dealt here. It's clear he's not happy about being dealt the first time and it's impacting his play. Also as mentioned we probably are on his NTC.

He's a great player but probably was made to look better then he actually is playing with two all world talents. He's a player that will cost a tonne to acquire and I doubt it will be worth it to whoever gets him.

Wild how initially that trade seemed like a huge W for the Canes and a solid but not great deal for the Avs

Wouldn't you want to know though if Ehlers can actually score in the playoffs before re-signing him. If you give him $9 million and he puts a goose egg in the playoffs, are you just resigning yourself if you're Chevy to being a regular season team? Conversely if Ehlers has more goals than he has in his career in one playoff series well then yeah you want the guy.

After last year's playoffs Pionk probably has to redeem himself to get an extension.

What makes you think Nik is going to sign now. You want to complicate a season start throwing numbers around in the middle of it. Worked well for Rantanen. I'm sure there was negotiations in the offseason, and it doesn't sound like Nik was interested in signing. But Chevy made the decision to give the team a chance to compete in the playoffs by keeping Nik instead of trading him. Because the offers probably weren't great.

In fact in the last 3 playoffs Ehlers and Logan Stanley have the same amount of goals. Pionk has 7 more points.

Nik for the vast majority of his career with us has been under utilized and mismanaged but anyone with eyeballs can see the talent, yes the playoffs have been a concern with him but again if we can sign him now then it's just a risk we need to take being that we are Winnipeg and not Vegas or NY.

His stock is taking a “MAJOR” hit right now. Nobody needs to go on a run in the playoffs more than the Jets for our core’s reputation, right after our core its Rantanen because at this rate he is not getting paid nearly what he thought. He needs to get his mojo back.
