oh look, this thread is devolving into "CTE BAD, LET'S BAN HOCKEY"

as usual.
Absolutely no one said anything like that at all. Nice strawman though...

Bettman is the same idiot that thinks extra workouts is a bigger crime than hiding a sexual assault and then allowing that to spiral into a minor being assaulted because they did nothing to stop him, all that was just a cash fine.

That's Bettman. An absolute wankbucket.

I wish Bettman would just go away, this league deserves better than that loser.
And this completely fails to see the point at hand. Bettman is irrelevant on this matter. He says things because it's his job to "protect" the value of the league for the owners. And every other commissioner will do exactly the same unless either the owners say otherwise or the pressure on the league is so overwhelming that they cannot posible deny things anymore.

Bettman isn't saying these things because he is a dumb and blind oaf, he is saying these things because he is a lawyer and the owners need him to act like that. Just like he didn't get into lockouts because he loved them so much, but because the owners wanted him to reach certain goals with a new CBA.

You could certainly ask whether it is the morally right thing to do, but this is something that does come with the job. Saying something on behalf of others, doesn't necessarily mean you actually believe what you are saying.

And yes, a breach of the CBA is a breach of the CBA. It has nothing whatsoever to do with Bettman - or anyone for that matter - thinking that "extra workouts are a bigger crime than hiding a sexual assault". Being coy about something that hurts your product is an issue. It would be horrendous logic not to punish someone breaking the rules just because someone didn't get punished enough for breaking a different rule though. You don't fix a mistake by making another mistake.

(snip) ... You don't fix a mistake by making another mistake.

I wish I could drill this into the heads of players, when I was a referee, who complained about a penalty being called against them after I missed one earlier (of which there were plenty - I wasn't perfect, and neither are NHL refs).

This is the other thing I wish I could have drilled into the heads of those players when I was a referee:
