I am not specifically commenting on this game- it's a general comment on his season vs the cap hit and term on his contract. I don't care about the OT goal... the series was lost at that point anyways. I don't see how we can win when our highest paid dman has been playing like that.
I think the back end of his season was significantly better, both watching him and metrics wise. He had a solid series against the Oilers and looked a bit more like the player pre-contract. He’s just not a number one guy, but I think paired with one he’s a solid #2. His game improved for the better with Demelo, I think it likely improves incrementally more with an even more skilled player.
I don’t think keeping him will kill them if they find the right partner for him but at the same time, if shedding the contract gives them more opportunity to sign a significant upgrade for him, they likely should.

Paul Friesen: “ what were your teams shortcomings”

Wheeler: “I don’t look at it that way”

And therein lies the problem. No accountability from leadership.

At least he didn’t tell him to F-off.
If i was a player i wouldnt answer his questions either. Not after reading his articles following post game interviews. The guys an untrustworthy snake that twits words with his slithery scales to produce interesting stories.

Guaranteed. If Ken Weibe asks that question, you get an honest answer.

I would file a petition to remove Paul Freisen, but i gotta admit, having a villain in the press conference post games makes things more exciting.

Every story needs a Darth Vader.

I'm not going to crap on the guys - they are professionals, and losing sucks, particularly so being swept. Show me a player that wouldn't be devastated by such a resolution.

I still believe we have some very high-end talent on this team with some very offensively gifted players, and I am not ready to give up on them yet.

One thing has been made painfully clear though - our preparation is poor. Whether it has been systems, schemes, adjustments, and I'd even argue skills training and physical conditioning - all seem to be poor. This needs to be corrected.

I remember a quote from Maurice wherein he stated that 'the team is so skilled they don't really need to practice'. This is not true. This is never true. You need to constantly work on the fundamentals as they form the base of your entire team's structure. Our stick work is severely lacking right now, as is our checking. Many of our guys seem to have really poor balance, cannot make a pass under pressure or know where best to use their stick effectively. This is concerning, and has been for some time now.

We need to get back to basics.

I'm not sure Maurice is the one to get us there.

People will talk about our defense but who with a straight face can tell me that CSW is better today than three years ago?

The question kinda made no sense.
Meh, I don’t know. He worded it very poorly and maybe tried a bit too hard but the gist of it was if Mo was underwhelmed by how his team performed against a team with a bunch of plugs at forward.
Mo bristles when things get a little too straight to the point. He prefers questions that allow him to spin.

I don't think I'd give an answer right now either. Honestly just got swept in embarassing fashion... I wouldn't even want to face the media right now nevermind being grilled about things like this not even 15 minutes later. Isn't there a year end PC?
Comes with the territory and paycheques with lots of zeros. Personally I think fans deserve sole accountability from the coach and leaders of the team, not flippant, petulant answers to questions that hit a little to close to home. Just man up and own it.

Well that sucked. Just finished my late, one man viewing party and I'm disappointed to say the least - I was hoping for more.
As a bandwagon jumper, I know I'm not feeling this to the extent that you all are. Ill offer my quick condolences and move on after a few brief words. I appreciate how friendly and welcoming you all have been the last few seasons, been very nice to have a team to root for and decent folk to root with while my team is busy sucking. That first round was a great ride and, though I've stayed pretty quiet, I've really enjoyed reading your comments before, during and after games/series.
Many thanks to you Jets fans, you're the friendliest bunch of strangers around.

PS - Cole Perfetti is still the guy I wish my team had chosen at 4. Was disappointed we didn't select him, but thrilled when he fell to Winnipeg. I hope he takes off for you all.
Stay healthy and safe during your off season, I will most likely see you all at playoff time next season.

Habs got lucky beating the Leafs by injuring Tavares, and then using their political powers getting Scheifele kicked out of the series for a clean hit. Cowardly I tell you!

So Chipman is sitting beside Chevy alone in the booth watching this team get outshot 44 to 16 in an elimination game. Watching us look like Japan facing Canada in the olympics.

If there isn’t significant change this offseason I don’t know what to think anymore. Are the owners just happy to be in the NHL?
Some real, effective, drastic almost but not desparate changes in a few critical areas are warranted. Coaching, leadership, defense, power checking forwards, etc. Minor easy stuff. Ha, ha, ha. Lols covering up the tears!

I don't know if you want to hear from a drunk Canadiens fans right now, but here goes.

I think todays showings wasn't a good example of your team. I think 8/10 series goes to you guys and we simply benefited from injuries and momentum. Hockey is crazy like that. My honest opinion though is that you guys will not only consistently outpreform the Habs for a long time coming, but also most the league. If we don't win the cup this year I truly hope it's you guys who pull it off. You have a damn good core with a couple straggler, but these stragglers still have decent trade value. There is lots of future and opportunity left. I get it, trust me I get it, but just remember Tampa lost in four then won the cup next year... so nothing is impossible. Cheers my guys

I just seen a team that wins via a sweep and plays a team that won in 7.... the sweep team has never won. Mind you it only has happened something like 8-9 times ever I think but still that is very interesting....

PLD sucked. almost everyone sucked again. Wheeler is done. There is no way he can play with Scheifele and top 6 again. They are a tire fire in our end and Wheeler is lost and useless clearly without Mark in the other end. I think the best interest of the team is to have Wheeler on the third line or even 4th like Perry/ Staal are in Montreal ... and on PP2... but again that never happens with Maurice.

Time to examine the corpse.
We had one effective forward this series - Lowry.
Wheeler had his worse game of the playoffs tonight. In fact, despite the overtime, this may have been Winnipeg's worse game of the series. We had maybe three good shifts the entire game... or was it two.
I don't understand this team. They were the polar opposite of the previous series. Is Scheifele that important to our forward strength?
Notice how I'm not even talking about PLD (oops, now I am). If he doesn't require surgery for some reason this offseason, then deal him to the North Kildonan Cobras for an outdoor dressing room wall-mounted heater. There's no excuse other than a serious injury. He shouldn't have been dressed.
Missing Laine already? :O

Nope. They discussed this very thing tonight on the Kenny and Renny post game show with Hustler and all said these kind of responses from Wheeler and the Jets are standard from them and are borderline insulting to knowledgeable media and fans. It’s not just a Paul Friesen thing.

Disagree. Kenny and Hustler have always gotten more info out of players than Paul Freisen. Always.

Sorry Paul.

Bang f***ing on.

The holier than thou attitude for drinking the kool-aid around everything True North does is just flat out tiring.

The honeymoon phase is long over now. It's been ten years since we have had our team back. Fans want to see a competitive team with direction, and rightfully so, we are all invested emotionally and financially in varying degrees.

I come to HF to get a raw feel from the fanbase - good, bad, or ugly. If you have a critical opinion, it hardly means you are less of a fan. At the end of the day, different opinions are good, and that's what makes this place interesting.
Are you kidding me? 90% of the posts here are negative. And have been for 9 of 10 years. You can't honestly tell me it's a tiresome love - fest on Hfboards because it's the exact opposite.

Interesting post.

The week after the end of the season, the Habx practiced moving as a 5 man formation. It's tough for forwards to get so regimented that they spend more time thinking about defense then offense, but the results are there. They are only allowed to freewheel inside the offensive zone otherwise....play as a unit.

It's a system that they are constantly practicing as well as tight box formation on pk and drawing an odd man on pp.

Maurice is dead wrong about "skilled players" not needing to practice. It's a 20 man team and they MUST play as a team.

I'm not here to annoy anyone, just offer an opinion on what I saw and know.

It's been enough time with Maurice and Chevy, they both had a very good shot at it but a team can't play like they did this series and think you don't need a big change. I like Maurice and Chevy but the team looked like they didn't really care out there and that's on the coach. And Chevy hasn't gotten the defense right since Buff quit . Hope they figure it out for next season.

It's a process...or so we've been told.

Hey we weren’t expected to win amirite?
Throw away year.
Development season.
How can you win with this roster.
And whatever other excuses that we hear almost yearly.
Frustrating to watch a team not ice it’s best roster.
