How Do You Grade The Trade?

Not going to respond to everyone who quoted me, but “I’ll be okay with re-signing Seeler if we trade Walker and acquire a 1st” was by far the consensus take on here.

Well, they did that. We’re hyperventilating on the margins. Getting RyJo instead of Ceci. Giving Seeler an extra year to keep AAV below $3m. Adding a late round pick.

The vision is exactly the one that people said they’d be okay with. Just get a grip.

Because the margins, how they got that first, what year the first is, and other things matter.

But hey, go off, King.

Sure as shit wasn't my take. I want both traded along with more. Just because some number of people have said a thing, doesn't make that the One True Dogma we must all adhere to.

I think the only people who need to "Get a grip" are the ones who feel the need to come whine and moan about invented grievances regarding what people may or may not post. It's ridiculous. I don't know if it makes you feel superior somehow, but it shouldn't. It's silly.

I kind of wish we kept Johansen. Not that he is a good player anymore or anything like that but with an expiring contract next year if he bounced back maybe they could have flipped him, even if just to get back the 5th rounder or something? Maybe he will report to the AHL and still be an option next year or was this with the intent of buying him our or terminating the contract in some way?

Uh oh, positive Beef is back in hibernation. :amazed:

No! I'm combating negativity, which is positive. "One set of people had one general take, and a different set of people now has a different one! How stupid! I pretend this is inconsistent and unhinged!" is not a positive vibe.

I am a proton working to balance the charge of a negative. Please ignore that this is backwards, chemistry is for nerds.

The general rule of thumb - a pick gets discounted one round for every year in the future it is.

i.e. a 2025 2nd round pick = 2024 3rd round pick. There's a bit more nuance to it but that's the baseline.

So if you think Walker's fair market value was a 2025 2nd round pick by himself, that's pretty much the equivalent to a 3rd round pick this year. I think he's worth more than that which is why I don't think they got enough back for taking on the RyJo contract.
Yeah I don’t abide by that metric or logical thinking. We’re talking at least 20+ draft positions between a hypothetical 2024 2 and a 2025 1, as long as the Avs stay good

The center pool should be slightly better in 2025 as far as prospects go. I personally would have wanted Gulyayev back instead of a future 1st, but with Byram going, that was likely never an option.

But I'd rather a 2025 pick from the Aves than a 2024 pick. This year we know they're competing. Next year a wide number of things can happen. where they lose in the first round and we get a top 20 pick with better center options

Some people on here need to devalue their take. Many feel the need to constantly whine, moan and air grievances. It's not ridiculous, and yes I feel superior and just a little silly.

They probably will be keeping him aha. I doubt anyone claims him. And my gut says the reason they have waived him is that... testing the market and hoping he is claimed...

They cant buy him out in season, have to wait until June.
They cannot terminate him unless he agrees. He won't given the money he gets.

They CAN send him to the AHL. But they have not yet seemingly.

I don't believe Briere has gotten a value surplus on any trade yet. In fact, I think he took value losses to arbitrarily check off some box. I thought the Petersen dump was rough if you parse it out, but it's now a theme that he doesn't accurately assess the value of these expensive multi-year dumps.

Getting the player in your system a year earlier and closer to the NHL should have more value for a team that thinks they are contending in two years.

This is the joke of it all. They keep kicking cans down the road, arguably at a value loss, which might make sense if they were committed to a long-term rebuild. But they're not. What they're doing is delaying the timeline of prospects, if they even hit, while chaining themselves to an aging core. It's just the latest iteration of having their cake and eating it too.

Of course I can smell a trade involving a 1st rounder (or two!) in the near future. Which is probably the point.

It's also a year later and less liquid.

And not to repeat myself, but taking on RyJo's contract alone was worth that conditional 1st. So what was Walker's actual value?

He’s definitely reporting, he’s still owed like $9m, or about $6m with the buy out. He’s not leaving that on the table. I wonder it they’re even going to want him around. He was not a Torts guy before, and if there was any question as to whether or not that changed, waiving him as soon a f***ing possible answered it. So if he plays in the AHL, I could see them working out a loan, or maybe there’s a trade out there they can retain half and get someone’s overpriced backup goaltender, like Anton Forsberg. Or maybe they just let him go home.

The Kuznetsov thing doesn’t sound crazy to me, the Caps are to the cap and want to make things happen next season.
