Surprised by some of the negative comments on Perunovich. Is there sceptism about his game other than the injuries? Looking at stats only he looks incredibly interesting.
If he clears all hurdles and develops his game to perfection he will become Torey Krug, a top-end PP specialist with defensive limitations. So at best he'd be the kind of player you want getting 4/5 minutes on a contender if everything goes well.

But everything is going extremely terribly instead of well. Instead of clearing them he is crashing through hurdles to the ground.

Nothing against the kid - he's just not rough and tough enough for the NHL. Feared this when he was drafted.

It's a combination of injuries and his play when he doesn't have the puck (so mostly the non-stats part of his game).

He is a liability defensively. In terms of defending when the other team has the puck, he is probably one of the worst 10-20 D men who played an NHL shift last season. He has other skills that offset a lot of that, but he just hasn't defended at anything near NHL level. This has caused some people to give up on him. Most haven't fully given up due to this and believe that the other skills are so high that he can overcome the poor defending if he improves it just a bit (which is completely reasonable for a small guy in his early-mid 20s).

However, he just can't stay healthy. This is his 3rd season since turning pro and he has been limited to just 36 professional games due to injury. He missed the entire 2020/21 season due to a shoulder injury. He started 2021/22 in the AHL, looked great, and got called up. He was in and out of the lineup for 19 games before suffering an injury in January that ended his regular season. He made it back for playoffs and played a few games. And now we're starting camp and he's already hurt again on a play where he did a terrible job preparing himself for contact.

Since leaving college in 2019, he hasn't been able to string together even half a season and when he's been in the lineup he has major defensive issues in his game. It is getting harder to believe he can be counted on to provide a meaningful contribution.

I don't think that the Blues can put him into their medium or long term plans at this point, but he still needs to wring as much money out of his playing career as possible. He's made less than a million dollars in his playing career. He'll make $750k this year, but he hasn't made enough to seriously consider hanging them up. Even with major injury red flags, there is enough potential for him to get at least one more NHL contract. Even if he suffers more injuries and fully washes out of NHL contention by the end of next year, he can go make a couple hundred thousand in Europe before hanging them up.
If Fabbri can come back and earn a decent contract, Perunovich can do it too. Up until this most recent injury, he's done a good job staying on his development curve despite the missed time.

But there are more slots at forward than on defense.

Crazy that he might not miss that much time. We still have 2 weeks till the start of the season, and he's already cleared for some level of contact. And that fact that he can participate in drills and stuff means he'll be ready to go when he's cleared, he won't need time to get conditioning up or anything.

I hope he’s not rushing himself and hiding discomfort.

Yes, he is not a good defender.

Fabbri had at least put together a few decent seasons in the NHL though. Perunovich really hasn't done anything. He will get another league minimum, hopefully from someone else.

He may not be out that long. That's a bit of over-reaction. Until they say he's done for the year, it may just be a couple months and he still has a chance to fight his way back onto the ice this season.

We don’t even know if he can play. So even if he comes back, no guarantee he sees any consistent playing time. Not an overreaction at all, it’s realistic.

I haven't heard anything about Matthew Peca during the camp. Is he injured as well?

I don't think so. Not sure.

He's signed to a two-way contract thru next season. Maybe he plays in the T-Birds exhibition games on Friday and Saturday.

This is what I’m hoping for. But we’re now going on day 3 since the injury and no announcement yet. I don’t think that can be good. I’m not ready to give up on the kid like some others but he’s also not doing himself any favors.

Good catch. I hadn’t even noticed his absence.

He’s not on the training camp roster:
Blues to begin training camp on Sept. 22

He’s signed to an NHL 2-way contract so there’s absolutely no reason why he wouldn’t be on the roster…unless he was injured. Toropchenko and Dickinson weren’t listed on that roster either so that’s my guess - injury. I wonder what his injury could be?

Too bad for him. He would actually have an opportunity to make the team with how open our 4th line and press box is. He's a ppg AHL player and good at defense at the lower levels. If he was bigger he'd be an NHLer for sure. Unfortunately he too is tiny. But he is fighting other tiny guys for those last couple roles.

We could have a 4th line of Walker (5'9") - Peca (5'8") - Acciari (5'10") with Highmore (5'11") and Bitten (5'11") in the press box. McGing (5'8") is the first call up.

I'd be concerned about that 4th line. High energy, for sure, but too small. Peca demonstrated last season that he's capable of adequately filling in when called up.

Shouldn't Pitlick figure into the 4th line?

That won't be the 4th line and spares though. Bitten and McGing will likely start in the minors, not sure on Highmore either. Pitlick looks like a solid bet to make the team and play on the 4th. Leivo, Alexandrov, Frk, Kostin are all over 6 feet, and Toropchenko when he's healthy.

When it's all said and done, the 4th and spares will be a good mix of small/energy and size.

I was more joking about how many small guys we have than advocating that as a lineup. I think Pitlick has earned a spot in the rotation and Toropchenko will when he is back. I also think Leivo is in the conversation.

No official update on Perunovich yet?

On Thursday, Berube said he was still being evaluated and they’d have an update Friday or Saturday.

Surprised they haven’t released anything yet. And I’d guess that’s not a good thing regarding his prognosis.

I wouldn't say it's too bad or too good. It's obviously not nothing, but also probably not super severe where it's a clear cut long-term injury.

I do not even care about Perunovich anymore. Never been high on him in the first place because he can't play defense.

I'm fine scouring the waiver wire to see if there's someone worth picking up for depth. Otherwise, Tucker or Rosen can fill that 7th spot and we can re-evaluate what we want to do closer to the deadline.

Here's a couple of updates from Jim Thomas this morning. Nothing ground breaking.
