Is it time to add Perunovich to thread title? He's been hurt nearly his entire career.
Here is a crappy video of him getting hurt last night.

He reached his arm out toward the glass instead of properly bracing for contact and it looks like he hurt the shoulder again. This one isn't just bad luck. he did a terrible job bracing for contact and put himself in a terrible spot. This is a type of play that happens all the time in the NHL and he's not going to stay healthy if he can't better prepare for contact.

1. Thanks for the link to the video. Hadn’t seen it as I wasn’t able to watch the game last night. Even though I get ESPN+ for free through Verizon, it was for whatever reason blacked out here in Des Moines. 😡🤦‍♂️

2. Damn it! You’re 100% correct about him not properly tucking the shoulder to take the hit. That’s all on him. I unfortunately wouldn’t be surprised if they announce sometime today he’ll be out a while. Hopefully not TOO long.

as someone who has a shoulder that dislocates, it sure looked like a real possibility from that video, arm looked like it stuck while the shoulder continued forwards

Thanks. I hadn't seen that. This is good example of how staying healthy is a skill. One that he unfortunately seems to lack.

Blacked out in Des Moines? That's crazy, hopefully it's just because it's preseason. I'd assume the in-market games for you would be the Wild or Hawks. In KC, I know I'll have to get a VPN to see them on ESPN+.

Apparently all 3 are blacked out there, I don't know how that makes any sense.

It's most likely because his in-market is Chicago. NBC sports Chicago aired the game. ESPN+ was blacked out for me in Indiana for the same reason, but I am DVRing a replay of it off of NBC Sports Chicago right now.

My in-laws live in a Des Moines suburb, and I looked up their zip and the Wild, Hawks, and Blues are all considered local teams for them. It sort of makes sense for Wild and Hawks as those are probably the 2 most teams that they'd be rooting for and the closest cities, St. Louis is just a bit further than Chicago. I would've expected the Wild to be the in-market team.

I guess that means they'd have access to all 3 teams with a tv service, but I'd think at least one of the teams would be more difficult to watch than the others.

Probably. I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m considered to be in-market for all 3 of STL, CHI and MIN.

Over the 15 years of me living here, the “home team” channel that would generally come with whatever cable/satellite/streaming package was all over the map. Sometimes FSMW/BSMW, sometimes NBCSports-Chicago, other times FSN/BSN. Ever since the Wild made Des Moines their AHL market, it’s been more FSN/BSN.

But with Directv Stream, I get all 3. I can probably thank the wide fandom of the STL Cardinals for my ability to easily get Blues games here. The Cubs AAA affiliate is also here so the Cubs are the most popular but the Cards have enough fans that the tv providers here know they pretty much have to have BSMW to stay relevant.

Partly because of the Cardinals and probably partly because of the connection that Des Moines and KC has for a few things, and Blues are the local team in KC.

Out of curiosity, I looked up the official local teams in Indianapolis, and it has the Blues and Hawks as well. I guess it technically makes sense, but still weird for major cities without a team that are still some distance from a local team, to have multiple teams blacked out.

I'm in the same boat, only with StL, Chicago and Detroit instead of minnesotta. Chicago is its own channel and Bally shows me stuff from Indana, Detroit (basketball and baseball but not hockey) and St. Louis. I don't think its a blessing though. The Blues are low down on the priority list for Bally Sports Indiana. If the Pacers and Pistons are both playing, I don't get the game. Even though they choose not to air it, its still blacked out. So I have to watch a truncated replay they air at 3AM. I'd rather I was out of market and could just use ESPN+

Right. I hope in the age of streaming, leagues figure out ways to make it easier for fans out of the main area of that team to watch. I'd think that would be a great way to try and grow the sport a bit, if you can make fans out of people that otherwise wouldn't have been because it's more accessible to them now.

I'm still kind of amazed the MLB.TV model wasn't copied by every league years ago.

So assuming Perunovich is out for an extended time period, are we now willing to consider my suggestion that we may need another depth D? With Scandella and Peru out, Rosen is out 7th D and Santini is 8th barring one of the youngsters stepping up (Tucker, Kessel Lyle, Loof).

Perunovich can’t take a normal hit.

How has he made it this far with girly shit like that?

Probably just depends on how they view someone like Kessel. I'm still fine with Rosen being the 7th, and I'm fine with the AHL depth, but if Perunovich is out long-term, then getting a NHL level 6/7 would make sense.

If we view Kessel as being pretty close to ready and can compete with Rosen, even though they play different sides, then I don't think we need to make a move.

Same arm he had his surgery on.

Yes. And not just because of total depth, but Borts and Miko as pairing make me nervous. i really want Borts as our 7d and put Miko with a partner who can move the puck.

I'm completely fine entering the year with Rosen as the 7th D and opening up competition for the #8 spot. Rosen showed me enough in the playoffs last year that I wouldn't mind seeing him get a month long run as an everyday player to see if he is actually a late blooming NHL guy.

We're still 2 injuries away from relying on the "new" 8th man in games and there will be plenty of depth D hitting waivers in the next few weeks to snag a guy if someone else goes down in that timeframe. I'm never going to complain about adding a depth D if they bring someone in, but it isn't something that concerns me.

If we are making a move, I agree with @Blueston about adding a legit 5/6 guy instead of targeting a depth AHL guy.

shoulder surgery, a nothing hit when "healthy" and shoulder is injured again

seems like I have heard this before...
It was a nothing hit for a player who properly braces himself for contact. Instead of doing that, Perunovich stuck his arm out at a 90 degree angle toward the glass. This is about the worst thing he could have done in this situation.

Perunovich.png

Instead of having the outside of his shoulder hit the glass, he now had his elbow hit boards/glass and drive his arm back toward his body while his body was being driven toward the glass. This is the result of how body's work, not an unsuccessful surgery. There is a reason you don't see NHL players try to catch themselves from hitting the glass when they get checked all that often. This is it.

Peru's positioning reminded me of Jagr's shoulder injury with the Rangers during the 2006 playoffs.

All he did was reach out with a fairly stiff arm and his hand/glove made impact with another player (something like that). That little bit of contact caused a somewhat major shoulder injury for Jagr.

My complete speculative guess is a separated shoulder. I don’t think he dislocated it but I could certainly see a pretty bad injury to the AC joint with the way he went into the boards with his arm stuck out like that.

How long would he be out for if thats the case?

Really bummed he had another injury already, was so looking forward to see how he would look once the season gets started.

It would totally depend as to what degree of separation he had (if that’s even what the injury is. Again, pure speculation on my part). Thankfully, I only have personal experience with a Grade 1 and 2 separation. For my Grade 2, surgery was discussed but ultimately I didn’t do it. Once you get to Grade 3 or beyond, surgery would be a for sure thing.
