He was great last night....but HOLY Smokes....the Caps were targeting him big time . He was able to sidestep a few season enders . I think Winnik should have had a Charging call on one attempted hit in the corner....if we had done that we would have a Match called on us .

And of course Ovechkin taking charges at him and Girardi with no calls as well.

17 games he'd need 13 in 17 to match most likely will not happen

Not likely, but possible. He had a stretch of 11 games in November where he scored 9 points. He has 5 points in the last 4 games, so maybe he can keep the hot streak going.

McDonagh has quietly roared to 10th amongst NHL D in p/60.

i seriously think the rangers are messing up by not having a top pair of Yandle and McDonagh. Mc has shown in the Olympics that the side he plays doesnt matter at all.

Those 2 should be out there for like 30 mins a night each...particularly in the playoffs.

McDonagh and Yandle should legit be seeing 24-25 minutes a night each.

Personally, I'd rather keep them apart so the minutes and talents are spread.

I also think Yandle with McD would probably result in less points from McD as he'd be taking on more of a stay-at-home role.

i know Torts got a LOT of flack from everyone, but two things he did better than any coach in my time watching the rangers...

1)Play his best players a lot of minutes...it changes from game to game and period to period..but when he saw a guy was going, he fed him ice time, and when a guy was slacking, he saw the bench.

2)Accountability. this goes hand in hand with number 1, but if you had a bad shift, or a series of bad shifts, you saw the bench. it had nothing to do with how many years youve played, or how green you were. if you played poorly, you didnt play, you didnt suit up, and you got torn a new one. On the flip side he never seemed to let 1 bad PLAY impact his decision on if you play or not. For example, a bad giveaway might get your ass torn a new one, but he'd throw you out there again. keep doing it, and youre sitting...but he gave guys chances to redeem themselves.

People talk a lot about his yo-yoing of Kreider...frankly Kreider could use a little of that. he needs to be better...seeing some bench time might wake his ass up.

i wish the rangers could have 2 coaches...one to actually set for the tactics of the team...and one to distribute the ice time. have them be completely independent of each other. you take the best aspects of Torts and the best aspects of AV and youve got maybe the best coach in NHL history.

AV is a very good coach...i just despise a few select things he does, and i feel like those have significantly impacted the rangers this year...far more than usual.

I think Torts' problem was that he would sometimes overplay those situations though. Lean on guys too much, barely use his 4th line at all and stock it with crappy fighters, then players would be worn down by the end of the season. And his accountability could be a little too severe at times as well.

Agreed with your 2nd post, but your first post about Torts I disagree a bit. Torts had a very short leash, lots of guys saw very little to no ice for some understandable mistakes. I'm not sure that was good for every player, some thrived, some didnt .

It's been said enough, this team is getting one last crack at it, when the season's done they certainly won't be able to say they weren't given the stage to perform.

yeah i was going to post something about this but got distracted by a john oliver youtube video :P

anyways, i agree, i think you should start the season as a 4 line team, and by the end shrink down to a 3 line team...play your best players the most minutes.

I think AV does tend to lean on lines that are playing the best when the team is down and trying to catch up, but really likes to roll things evenly if ahead or tied. Dunno, sometimes it works sometimes it seems like no one can get really get rolling

He doesn't seem to have a trouble playing McDonagh a lot though.

Ryan McDonagh is the only NHL defenseman who has been plus-10 or better every season since 2010-11.

I believe that both Daniel Girardi and Marc Staal have a different approach this season with an interesting twist. And hopefully AV and his new addition to the coaching staff do the right adjustments to get the most out of their defense with the current players including Ryan Mcdonagh.
I don`t expect a cup this year with our current rooster.. Perhaps with an amazing run from Hank and without major injuries - maybe a new Stanley cup final who knows? ;)

And he's not so quietly been crushing it whenever Nick Holden isn't on his right side.

Playing like the McDonagh of old. A true joy to see.

If he keeps up his current level of play, he should be in the Norris conversation. Although, honestly, as nice as that would be for McD, award or no, I just want him to keep up the current level of play. Him playing so well is a true difference-maker for this team.
