I think the defense in general just hasn't looked the same as it did in prior years. A lot more inconsistency.

I don't know what the deal is, but I'm hoping this was just a down year, and they rebound next season.

Gotta be injury related and maybe the C got in his head too much. He's just not the same player I don't know wtf happened
 
The mystery that has become McDonagh is that the worst mistakes he makes are not injury related. They are focus related.

Look I don't blame him for getting beat by a guy like Ovechkin, although last season he wouldn't have gotten beat. I blame him for the constant stupid passes that get picked off in our zone. Hold on to it. Skate with it. Pass to someone else. He consistently makes terrible decisions with the puck in our end and that is my major gripe with what has become of McD.

He used to be my favorite player. I always paid attention to him and strictly analyzed everything he did. I think last season the number of mistakes he made could be counted on one hand. Very, very little. This year, holy crap I don't understand what happened to this kid.

Agreed, good post. He's turning over the puck in our zone more frequently than he has in the past. He used to be so poised with puck and now it seems like he panics a bit.

Absolutely.

This is not McDonagh of last year at all, in any zone.

He is not playing that well and it's hurting us.

I remember back when he was looking terrible in the pre season but that was because of his shoulder injury or whatever it was and then the season started and he still looked not up to his usual self. I thought he'd snap out of it. He still hasn't. What happened to him? Rhetorical question, of course. We may never know.

I mean, it's just speculation, but my money would be on:

-Poor off season conditioning
-Recovery from shoulder injury last year and early this season
-Trying to "do too much" as the new captain
 
What the **** happened to him man.... I've been telling myself all year that he's a playoff performer and would be back to his old ways for the playoffs. But that is absolutely not the case.
 
I hope the media blast him a big one. He's been getting a pass all year long. While Girardi hasn't.

:huh: I don't recall Girardi ever being given a hard time by the media.

But I agree that McDonagh should be put on full blast.
 
What an atrocious game by McDonagh, but like most have pointed out he has been brutal all season so this is nothing new.
 
Add me to the list of those who can't figure out what happened to McD this season.

He was amazing last year and I remember having serious discussions about McD playing at a Norris level especially as he emerged in the playoffs.

Injury, weight of the C, who knows. But this is not the same player who dominated last year.

Even prior to his Norris year last season, he was ALWAYS a beast defensively.

Have no idea what happened to him this season. I really hope it was a down year, and not the McD will see going forward.
 
I remember Gaborik playing like ass every other season after scoring over 40. I remember Nash playing like ass last season after being on pace for 40. Neither pales in comparison to the disappointment I feel in McDonagh this season. The other two had injury excuses. Did Burrows injure McDonagh's brain? Most of his bad plays are due to idiocy. I thought this guy was our next great defenseman. He was my favorite player. Maybe last year was a career year, but the regression should be to 2012 or 2013 McDonagh not an ECHL player.
 
as a goalie ... that play that lead to the 2nd goal by Buarkovsky is the kind of stuff I'd use to make fun of my defenseman for the better part of an hour. In my beer league.

I mean, why the **** wouldn't he just skate it back? Why would he try to force it by the Caps player? Total lack of basics on this play.
 
I think he will bounce back, but he has been **** compared to last year.

He even looks a little confused in his facial expressions on the ice during close ups. It's so uncharacteristic of the ice water veined future Norris D we saw last year.
