Roster Building XXV: Winning Rantanen's Undying Love

I don’t think there’s a chance in hell they end up with Byfield. He’s locked in cheap and is only 22x

I do think Clarke++ is a very real possibility. There’s been rumors of them being interested in Spence but I don’t see it. The last thing they need is another sub 6’ RD.

Clarke, Laferrriere then but they also don’t really need Clarke with morrow chatfield walker next year

Brandt has more of a pedigree as well as more NHL experience. I’d imagine if they picked up Clarke, Morrow would be dealt for to upgrade the roster elsewhere.

The only downside of Clarke I’ve read about is that his skating might be a little suspect. Morrow doesn’t have those issues. Also, if they got Clarke, where does he play? Do they send him to Chicago? Not really any open slots with the big club.

Again, a weird time to have this discourse when they were responsible for the only goals yesterday.

He matches up that line as a defensive line against opposing team’s top players. And it’s a role that they generally excel at. And they play 3rd line minutes. I don’t see the issue?
A broken clock is right twice a day. Sometimes I think Rod's fantasy is them consistently being our top offensive line and/or us being on the perpetual struggle bus to scrap goals together because of the way he stretches thin our skilled players and almost "filibusters" the team itself by having them on the ice when we need goals.

They are the vestiges of what I pray will be our Old Identity as this team gets more skilled players.

I'm not going to say it won't be Clarke...but if the scouting reports from Kings fans are accurate (kid feels zero defensive responsibility whatsoever, makes high-risk decisions to jump into the play constantly, and has footwork issues making him slow to get back...all of which is how he found himself riding the pine.), I feel like there's no chance he's not flipped right back out the door. His value is highest as a trade chip.

Or...Rod kills him in the locker room as a warning what happens to defensemen who refuse to be defensively-responsible.

I don’t recall where I saw it, but Mike Futa was saying the other day that he heard Rantanen would consider signing with a team on the west coast. He was the one suggesting Zegras + Gibson, and seems like Andy Strickland hinted at those 2 a few days ago.

Most of the insidurz seem to link him with LA.

I forgot about Dallas. I bet they’d try to trade Marchment ++ for Rantanen. Maybe Bourque or Stankoven too?

I don’t see what TOR has to offer that would beat out the western teams if it came down to it.
What’s funny about the LA statement is that at the trade deadline the statement was Mikko liked the “country” life and NC could be a good fit.

LA is clearly not that.

To me, only a few Rantanen trade scenarios make sense for Carolina:

LAK: Kempe and Clarke
TOR: Marner
DAL: Stankoven and Bichsel
ANA: Terry and Mintyukov
I would take knies plus.

I guess the whole…Aho best friend thing…was way overblown and completely irrelevant. Wonder if there’s more “tampering” going on?
Same agent as pretzel. No doubt he has been drumming up outside interest.

Seems like a somewhat recent comparable trade is Giroux from PHI to FLA for Tippett, a 1st and a 3rd. PHI also included a former 1st rd flop in Rubstov and some picks. Giroux was strictly a rental and would only waive for FLA

As a rental, Rantanen has accomplished substantially more than Giroux did at that point in their respective careers and Rantanen doesn’t have the control to force his way onto just one team with a NMC.

Considering all that, I think in strictly a rental package, the Canes could reasonably expect a substantial bit more than what Giroux returned. If there’s an extension agreed upon, which I think is unlikely, who knows how much they can get.

If you think that Necas was likely to walk regardless next summer, I suppose getting a good bit more than the Giroux package for Rantanen as a rental may not be the worst thing in the world, plus you have the world class Taylor Hall.

The exaggerations and caterwauling about this is crazy. The Canes only lost one season of team control in that swap, and it was for the potential for a huge upgrade. It was a calculated risk, but we didn't mortgage the future or anything like that, and if the Canes can't sign him, we'll either get other good players at the deadline or a giant amount of cap space this offseason. No harm, no foul.

I think it comes down to the opportunity cost and the loss there. Necas should have been the piece to use as the centerpiece to bring in a premier player, which was the case. The problem is said player is an impending UFA and it looks like they didn't do their due diligence ahead of time on what it would take to keep him long term. I flat out WANT to be wrong on this with an extension announced here shortly but I'm in "I'll believe it when I see it" mode with that at this point.

If we can get some of the (I think) pie in the sky returns that have been thrown around here, I'd be fine with moving him. I'd rather keep him but you totally get it at that point.

I'd assume it'd be something not quite as good like Trevor Moore, Spence, and a pick. Or Marchment, Bourque, and a pick.

If it's pure futures and we aren't flipping that into something else or just have other stuff planned pretty quickly after, I'd be disappointed. But that could be the reality if we end up set on this path of moving him so we don't end up with nothing.

And I’m guessing the fact that neither of those two things are happening doesn’t do anything to dissuade that line of thinking? Getting worked up over delusions of your own making seems unwise.

I'm going to choose to agree to disagree with you on this topic and move on.

I mean, you’re free to disagree, but the fact remains that Staal’s line is getting 3rd line minutes and they’re certainly not the line that’s sent out there when the team needs a tying goal late in the game. So your argument that that’s what’s happening holds no water.

Have any of these talking heads predictions come true so far. Saw tons of them saying Rantanen would be moved from Colorado. Whoops. Jones to Florida. Nope. Bunting. Nope. Funny how they don't say anything about Marner in Toronto who is also a UFA. Funny. I'm no expert but if I throw enough darts one or two might hit. Clicks for cash.
