He looked pretty bad on Chimera's second goal, (caps 4th) that blown assignment was horrendous. Chimera was practically free for a good 5 seconds to do w/e he wanted.

If a single blown assignment means a d-man has been absolutely awful, every single d-man in the league is absolutely awful.

I'm just going to refer to you John Moore, Ryan McDonagh, and Dan Girardi then.... because if Staal is bad over one blown assignment, then my god McDonagh must be an absolute pylon

I think that's something McDonagh and Av and ulf are trying to add to his game.. U watch guys like Shea weber and ryan suter they're great with there sticks and physicality. Staal is great at the stick work but his physicality has declined with the injuries. McDonagh is probably trying to add this to his game but doesn't try it in important games hence why he's played better in must win games.. Hopefully I'm right and he can turn it on in the playoffs

This is a good point, if McDonagh could play with the physicality and positioning he built his game on last season and before, while adding a stick like Staal who I think is one of the top in the league in that facet of the game, he will be absolutely deadly on the blue line. I think McDonagh's conditioning may not be where it should be and he's maybe trying to rely more with the stick because it's easier.

Also the notion that Staal is awfully is absolutely hilarious, he's been great since signing that contract.

It doesn't its just an example to support my claim. (he needs to be better than he has been)

Well everyone has to be better than they've been... That's just a fact of Stanley cup competition. Staal has been one of our best dmen throughout the season but realistically he won't be moved up to play with McDonagh(which is wat I want) so staal will play 2nd lines for the majority of the playoffs so him stepping up isn't nearly as important as McDonagh

i agree, but of the 2 comparatively, as of late, Staal needs to improve more.

And don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on Staal, he is still solid all around defenseman, has the best poke check in hockey, and is a team first guy. But sometime he's soft on the boards and gets lost positionally. (which is a major concern) and i think needs to be addressed.

Soft on the boards? You have any idea how hard it is to separate the puck from the player and then MOVE that puck to your defense partner?

Staal does it on a nightly basis.

Staal has been average or above average for most of the season. McDonagh has been below average or average for most of the season. Yet to see a game where I thought "Okay! McDonagh is BACK!" There have only been games I've thought "Hey, maybe McDonagh is getting it back!".

I think people underestimate the stres that C brings to someperson his age......dayum original 6 team are youre the captain my brain would have exploded

I Also think people hold McDonagh to a higher standard so average for McDonagh might be a great game for staal

Yes. McDonagh has been playing alright for most of this season, but not up to the Norris level play he showed he's capable of last season. I'm not entirely sure what it is other than he doesn't seem to be making the reads he was last year and still seems to be trying to do a little too much at all times instead of doing a great job at one thing at a time (defensively he seems like he's often trying to play two guys or two positions at once while thinking he can recover if he misses things) but saying that he is below average of terrible in a general NHL defenseman sense is ridiculous. On his worst nights he's still making plays right and left that only he on this team can make.

McDonagh was playing like the Darelle Revis of hockey last season. Rarely got beat, and basically nullified any chance against on his side. He played absolutely suffocating defense. I'm just not seeing that this season. I mean, he's still very good, just not playing up to what I think he's capable of.

I swear the dude is the most overrated player in the history of the NYR. And please stop he is not an elite/great player he is a young player who still has some brainfreezes.

you people need to stop blaming Girardi for McDonagh's mistakes. Captain golden boy needs to be held accountable for his showboating and laziness with the puck this year.

McDonagh is by far our best defenseman, but he hasn't been the same since he suffered these shoulder injuries. He'll be okay in time. He's not overrated. He's barely 25 years old, and he'll contend for a few Norris Trophies on a sweetheart contract. Stop hating.

Did you see McDonagh give the puck away tonight? That was partially his fault but Girardi made a bonehead pass nearly gave it away - McDonagh had no business even having that puck.

Well, we lost the Gomez trade.

My hats off to you Bob Gainey...

What the heck happened to McDonagh this year? He has to be injured. There's no way a player of his talent level can just drop off the face of the Earth like this. Is it the Captain C? Does it really affect him that much? Brian Leetch syndrome?
