Like everyone else on this team (except maybe Nash because he's having an all-time Ranger season) I'm judging McD's season solely on the playoffs.

He's been performing very well in the last 7-9 games... Shoulder looks like it's finally healed, he's ripping one-timers like he was last year. Skating looks a bit more fluid, and his defense has gotten better.

Agreed. The skating difference is very noticeable IMO. That's huge for him since it's the foundation of so much of his game.
How's his offensive zone starts? I'm not an expert on advanced stats but we suck at FO's, so if he's constantly starting in the D-zone, it makes sense his CF would be also not so good.
I'm not expert either, but I'm pretty sure those don't wouldn't affect his CF THAT much. certainly they play a factor, but he really has not been very good.

Offensive zone starts and FO's have an incredibly minimal effect on possession stats barring extremities.
McDonagh just hasn't been good.

What do u guys c that McDonagh is doing wrong? I notice him reaching for pucks more in the d zone and not shoving people off them like he used to.

Agreed that he's been reaching. He hasn't moved his feet and he's looked a step slower all year to me. I've seen him get beat to pucks that he'd have never lost in the past few years. His feet always seemed to have made up for any lapse in decision making.
Mainly though, it's like he's in a daze...it looks like he's thinking about what he chores he needs to take care of when he gets home and then finally snaps out of it once he's caught. I'm sure that he's not actually thinking about other things, but it's kind of what it looks like.

He produced well in the playoffs, but he hasn't been the same defensively going all the way back to the Burrows hit.

I don't know, he makes more bad plays and gets beat in the defensive zone more than I've ever seen.
By his standards, he's most certainly been awful IMO

I think people are just over analyzing. I've noticed him making the bad turnovers that he's made this year plenty of times prior to it, but it seems to be pointed out more now than it was before for whatever reason. With the way he handles the puck, he's going to have some sketchy turnovers. Not because he's a bad puck handler, but because he makes plays on the breakout which are very precisely timed plays, and there are times when a player just loses his timing a bit.
He's been very good the past ~20 games or so and I'm very confident that he'll be at the top of his game in the playoffs.
By his standards yes, but he's been ok by an average defenseman's standards. Of course we need much better than that.

What was he thinking or doing on the Lucic kick-in? He was standing around with no positional awareness at all. Incredibly bad from our #1 Dman and captain.

Has he ever been 100% this season? No. Will he be 100% in the post-season? Probably not.
