Malkin, Jagr, Backes all very far off I guess. He is not projected to be even a poor man's 1st liner in the NHL. He is a Patrick Maroon kind of a player.

Backes has been around a 55 point player during his career. If Korshkov can develop into a 50 point player that goes to the net and is strong along the boards then the comparison isn't that far off.

WAY more natural skill than a 25 goal scorer (T-30th in league)?

Guess he's gonna come over and pot 40 goals?

He plays with Draisatl and McDavid. He had better score goals. Look at him when he doesn't play with them (basically when he played for Anaheim). That's all you need to know. And yes, it's abundantly clear to anyone with eyes that Korshkov has a lot more natural skill than Maroon.

Really excited about the Leafs 2016 2nd round picks.

It's been a while since the Leafs even had 2nd round picks to make and 2015-2016 seem to be doing well.

If he becomes a 55pts player he will exceede my expectations. He will never be as physical as Backes. His style is very different. Comparing Korshkov to Backes is that far off.

How much of Korshkov have you seen? If he is that talented, why isn't he showing it and scores way more in the KHL?

Maroon is a pretty good comparison. And his numbers are what I would expect from Korshkov playing with McDavid.

He was compared to David Backes at the draft.

that's probably a good comp, it's the defending the puck with his body that I think is the defining tool, Backes does it well too

Now you are cheating by dissecting the play with a proper vid.

My point still is that happens in the NHL a lot too, so...

Every goal is somebody's mistake.

nope, everything I said was evident from the .gif. The guy who scored the goal was standing behind 2 defenders who were within 10 feet and not covering anyone, they weren't even aware that he was there, brutal defense. Not sure why this is an argument tbh, this is a textbook "what the **** were you guys doing?" defensive play. Sure it happens everywhere, its still bad defense and Korshkov's goal needs a little qualification because of it

I'll disagree that every goal is derivative of a mistake, there's a lot of offensive talent in the league and sometimes that talent just beats defenses.

If a defenceman makes no mistake he can't be beaten.

A friendly tournament called Alrosa Cup - participants are Russia B-team, Norway and Slovenia.

is there any chance if a player plays really well at this tournament they get a call to the russian A-team? i doubt korshkov does enough but hypothetically if he did would he get a shot at the world champs? or is it a set team like "you made the b team this year work hard next year see how you go" type thing

JVR is a #2 overall that panned out so no.

He's so underrated by fans because leafs probably can't afford his next contract. Leivo, leipsic, korshkov, even kapanen won't properly replace jvr.

He may be able to replace komarov one day though

with all due respect kapanen could probably replace and do better than jvr right now

you do realize he was considered better than nylander and fiala pre-draft; right? just had """attitude issues"""

anyways; it makes more sense to move jvr for a defenseman in large part of both korshkov and kapanen; mainly korskov.

And Virtanen was considered better than Kapanen pre draft, should we be wetting our britches over Virtanen's limitless potential?

Kap can definitely not replace JVR next year, lol.

So what? That was years ago. Is he better than nylander? No. Thought it was nylander who they considered to have attitude issues anyways.

I like both korshkov and kapanen, but neither player projects to be as big of an impact player as jvr has been in his career.

At the same time I agree with you on it being the right time to move jvr. Strictly for cap reasons and to improve our defense. But not because we have better options then him at wing. We just have more options at wing.

given how he's been playing on the 4th line with his speed+skills with extra time on 5v5+pp assuming he plays on the matthews or nylander line he definitely could.

stop looking at draft position and how they play

(oh; and virtanen wasn't even a top 5 player from the CHL; so i don't get where you get that from)

You're the one who brought up pre draft rankings..

From you, who brought up pre-draft rankings.

This kids skillset looks really really exciting.

Big, can skate, good hands, good passive ability and finish. Seems to use his body well to hold off or angle defenders.

Think the Leafs might have a good one here.

He has the makings to be a Babcock favourite type of player, wish I saw more goals created from his shot from the outside though. Being a multi-threat is always good.

Very excited about his potential.

We need these players to pan out, even if as a bottom six forward, to save ourselves from overpaying for those players as free agents. Constant stream or skilled replacements to augment our extremely talented core.
