I don't get it, why? Canadians don't watch WJC's anymore? He was the best player on Russian team, at least among forwards.

I don't get it either. In my book drafting 20 year old is less crapshoot than 18 year old.

There was very limited exposure to him outside of the WJC's, and that tournament has proven to not be a very good litmus test for NHL success

I think it's safe to say that we're happy with the pick, but at the time no one had him on their draft boards (at least the publicly available ones) so it was a surprising pick at the time, even for the media analysts:
http://www.mynhldraft.com/2016-draft/nhl-draft-rankings/

Seems like Hunter&co are on to some draft inefficiencies though, even at the time there was a lot less outrage for going off the board among fans than there would have been in previous regimes because there's more faith in Hunter

Kaprizov has 19 points in 23 games, being 1 year younger and 135 pick overall, but Korshkov isn't bad as well. Not sure why does Toronto need another winger, but it's a different story...

They both have different roles according to the Russians who post here. Kaprizov is 5'9, Korshkov is 6'4. Leafs have wingers but no one like Korshkov in the system. Not even close.

Different teams, different roles. Yet Korshkov is putting up really good numbers for the opportunities he's getting, already surpassed last year's totals. Kaprizov is going to be excellent but they were taken in different drafts.

Also, even though there's a lot of wingers in the pipeline doesn't mean they'll just stop selecting them, especially when they have like 10 or 11 picks in a draft.

I believe he's (mostly) suggesting Kaprizov is also producing at a higher rate, and is a year younger, but isn't included in the list.

Or was that original quote just limited to strictly 20 year olds?

Kaprizov is 5'10 and even heavier, than Korshkov. But yeah, it was about the best Russian young players.

It's simply because he wasn't a name they had heard before. It's the reason most wanted Benson with the same pick, he was a name.

Go back a few years. The same was said about Andrew Neilson.

Another Namestnikov special, same scout who tipped the Leafs off about Soshnikov.

theory being a 20 year old doesn't have as much development left where as a 18 year has more and therefore could be a higher ceiling player. SO the 20 year old may be more likely to reach the NHL (say 3rd liner) the 18 year old could a higher skill player (say a 1st liner). I don't really agree with especially after the start to the season Korshkov has had he Sounds really good, i have not seen him play though.

I do understand your point, however, I disagree about the "potential" aspect as it depends on the league of the player.

An 18 year old putting up amazing numbers in the CHL - being draft seems likely. A 20 year old putting up good numbers in the CHL usually cautions spectating fans. Why? I think most people realize that at 20 you're a lot more physically mature than an 18 year old. Therefore, it is easier to win battles in the CHL against a younger player and put up more points. There's a lot of issues with this line of thinking - because there have been plenty of over-agers who go on to have good careers.

In terms of Russian talent there is a hesistation as not all make the NHL due to the difference in play style overseas. If we are comparing quality of competition in leagues Korshkov has been playing against a high level. The KHL > CHL no doubt.

As an 18-20 year old jumping into the KHL is physically demanding and quite the fast pace. The game is thought intellectually at a different level.

2014-15 MHL 23GP 13G 15A 28P 18PIMS 14+
Playoffs 14GP 5G 8A 13P 10PIMS 3+

He had great numbers in his the Russian Junior league - just want not physically mature imo to put up points in the K. He's showing encouraging signs and has potential to be a top 6/middle 6 forward - if not better.

He has a lot of raw ability and can do everything well.

Good to see the emotion from Korshkov.
Scri-vezina is stil alive and well, too.

Cool to see this "off-the-board" 2nd rounder bounce back from serious injury to score in the KHL playoffs.

Tell ya what: a 6'4" tall physical goal scoring player sounds like a pretty decent replacement for a certain power forward in the current Leafs lineup that they may just trade for D help.

Got to trust Leafs scouts + Mark Hunter that there's something in this guy for taking him so high.

Part of an influx of Russians in the Leafs group since Shanny arrived. :handclap:

Korshkov - 2016
Valiev - 2015
Zaitsev - 2016 FA
Marchenko - 2017 waiver claim
Soshnikov - 2015 FA

Valiev and Korostelev are Russian nationals but were drafted out of the CHL, so they're North American skaters for all intents and purposes, scouted by the Leafs WHL and OHL scouts

Agreed on the principle though, we're investing in Russia and it's paying dividends. It also seems to be one of the places that guys are slipping through the NHL scouting cracks to hit UDFA status then making impacts in the NHL when signed, so a good place to find free wallet gems

Nice. I really like the kid, and looks like he had a pretty successful sophomore campaign in the K. Has he put on any weight this year? I remember him being a bit of a beanpole at the draft.

Eliteprospects has him at 187lbs now, IIRC he was 179/180 at the draft. So safe to say he's put on a little, hopefully its more than that by seasons' end

JVR esque on that above goal.

Had an assist in his first MHL game back from injury during a sort of conditioning game too. This guy just continues to produce despite getting less than 15mins/game. Pretty sure he's committed to the KHL for another year but by the sounds of it he could make a push for the Leafs next fall if he has a good summer.

Shanny has probably the best contacts in Russia ATM. Has Kozlov in Spartak, Fedorov in CSKA and Namestnikov in Loko. 3 of the top organizations for producing talent in Russia. I read Shanny had in depth convos with all 3 of those guys which is how leafs ended up with Zaitsev (CSKA) Korshkov (Loko) and Boblyev (played for Kozlov this year for Spartak) Koz also played with Soshnikov and Mytishi.
