The Jordan Dumais mystery: the forward divides NHL scouts

At 5'9" and 165 lbs, the native of L'Île-Bizard, Montreal, doesn't have the smoothest skating, which scares many scouts who wonder if Dumais' style of play, very effective at the junior level, will transpose to the NHL. In March, he was ignored by the Canadian Hockey League who did not invite him to the top prospects game, which raised the ire of his teammate in Halifax Zachary L'Heureux, who criticize the CHL on Twitter.

“I have always been an underestimated player, mentioned Dumais to the Journal. It's been that way all my life. I know I was better than some players who were in the top prospect game. Each time, it gives me extra motivation.”
In the Maritimes, some media started talking about the “Dumais mystery”. Some people find it hard to understand how a player who produces so much can be ranked 72nd by the NHL Central Scouting among North American skaters.

By talking with some recruiters, we come to the conclusion that points are good, but that does not mean everything.

“The combination of an average skating and a small frame is not ideal for professional hockey. On the other hand, he has been scouted on a lot and someone is going to take a chance. You can't ignore his points and his intelligence on the ice, ”reacted an Eastern recruiter we spoke to.
Another recruiter, who works for a Western team, believes that he has not stolen his place in this select group.

“Points are one thing, but when you look at how he collects them, it is often him who is the cause because of his sense of anticipation and because he creates turnovers. His skate isn't a huge shortcoming for me and I think it's his mechanics that make him not look fast. One thing is certain, it is that we feel that he has something to prove and it shows in his game.

Pretty embarrassing that he might pass 100pts on the year at 17 years old and doesn't get a CHL Top Prospects invite because of size and strength.

I do hope his skating improves.

I would like to think he could be a 2nd round pick maybe even a late 1st round pick but being 5'8" many organizations will be hesitant. But you have to look at the NHL now-a-days it's getting shorter and faster.

Its so weird that he is not considered as 1st round pick

+ the fact that he plays for a team that is very young

Desnoyers 82 points, is 3rd oldest player, at 20, he was drafted in 2020

Vidicek 60 points, is 17, he is 2022 draft player
L'Heureux 56 points, is 18, he was drafted last year
Orr 44 points, is 18, he was drafted last year
Cataford 40 points, just turned 17, he is 2023 draft player
Boucher 37 points, is 19, 2020 NHL undrafted, QMJHL undrafted,
signed as an free agent, playing in his rookie season
Swan 21 points, is 17, he is 2022 draft player
Peeters 17 points, is 19

with Dumais, that makes it 9 players, average age; 18 years

then 2 x 21 year olds, which raises the average a bit,
- the rest are rookies, 2021-2024 players

2. Shane Wright (63 GP 32 Goals 62 Assists 94 Points)

Some scouts must be confused on what do to with him.

2g., 3 a. today...He is a riser for the upcoming draft...A team with a lot of picks should takee a gamble with him... A kind of Trocheck or Point in the making...A point producer! He is getting better and better, thats what the scouts want about a rookie...Should surprise in the 2 round...

Don't think he'll go before the 3rd round, 4th round most likely.

Reasons: small, doesn't win board battles in junior, average skater (at best), lacks a transition game. Just my opinion, btw.

There is 0 chance he lasts past the second and should be a first-round pick. Very good playmaking and offensive instinct shouldn't get looked over because of board battles, you can get all the fourth line battlers you want in the late rounds but you don't pass up on top 6 skill.

0 chances he passes the 2nd, I have some secret rankings and it looks like these days he’s not dropping, lol

In my opinion, from my viewings, he needs a lot of work for his game to translate at the next level. 40% of his points have come from playing Cape Breton, Baie-Comeau and Moncton.

I'll say he has great anticipation and he's good at placing the puck where he wants when he shoots.

If we look at the past drafts, small players that lack skating and a transition game don't go in the top 2 rounds. Whether they should or not is another discussion, imo.

Btw, I was a big fan of Brayden Point and Bobby Brink in their draft years, but I don't think he's in their category from what I've seen, despite the points he put up. I still wish him the best and to prove me wrong. :)
