What excites me is that as of now Pulju's looking better than Rantanen and Nylander did when they started in the AHL.

Hard to conclude how it'll translate to the NHL ofc.

Jesse Puljujarvi thread VII.

Carry on.

That partly means there was more to discuss (which there was), you need to count how many people were praising him and how many of tje same people were discussing him because a lot of people were questioning his hockey IQ

Puljujarvi is sooo good. Even as a Flames fan, it annoys me how the Oilers handled him (like they have with every other top prospect) this season.

To me, he's clearly NHL ready as he's an amazing skater, is already pretty reliable defensively, drives play, and his offense speaks for itself among many other things.

He never really got a chance to prove his worth. Even when he was given a few games on the top line with McDavid, he was quickly thrown back down the lineup.

He's gonna be a great player

??? They handled him the same way they handled Draisaitl in his rookie year. They fed him water from the firehose... and even when it was clear he wasn't ready, they kept giving him a bit more... until mid season when they mercifully sent him down.

It worked out GREAT for Draisaitl, who took the lessons and went back (in his case) to Junior to apply the learning. Looks like Pulju is doing the same thing now in the A.

I don't understand your bolded statement... or rather it isn't factually based. Draisaitl and Pulju are the ONLY prospects Edmonton handled this way.

Eberle: matured in the CHL for 2 years then AHL for 10 games and playoffs
Hall: straight to the NHL where he was among the top rookie scorers (until injury)
RNH: straight to the NHL where he was the top scoring rookie (until injury)
Klefbom: two full years in Sweden, then almost a full season in AHL before spot duty in NHL
Yak: straight to the NHL where he was the top goal scorer among rookies
Nurse: two full years of CHL + AHL games & playoffs
Draisaitl: half season NHL, then half season CHL
McDavid: straight to NHL where he led all rookies in scoring (until injury)
Pulju: half season NHL, then (we assume) half season AHL

So... what's the consistent link here?
1) If you were 1st overall you were given full opportunity in the NHL (all of whom, at least as rookies excelled)
2) If you were top 5 drafted you were given 30-40 games to see if you were ready, then back down for seasoning
3) If you were 1st round drafted you were given a couple of years to round out before any pressure to delivery

Your narrative would make a lot more sense if the Oilers had handled their 1st round picks the same way... which they haven't.

If you want to talk about the lack of vet support for many of those guys... that's true, but it was a different issue that has more to do with a decayed/rebuilding NHL roster than it does with the decisions about player development.... see Colorado, Buffalo, etc. Teams get to the bottom for reasons.

Wouldn't think twice as a Oil fan. Josi would turn the Oil into an instant cup contender. Zero reason why the Preds do it though and Josi is worth a lot more than JP. With his contract and production I'd argue he's probably top 10 in value for the whole league.

Agree... I'd definitely trade him for Josi.

Can someone comment on his recent play without just statwatching?

I watched the Friday game. He looked good to my eye. He's a lot more comfortable and poised at this level. He was holding on to the puck for longer periods and played a really strong cycle game.

He has a ton of potential in the Ovechkin spot on the PP. He had a couple of really lethal chances. He did fan a few passes, just as he did at the NHL level, but he's putting himself in good positions to score.

Overall, he still shows incredible potential, but needs time to polish his game. If i were in charge I wouldn't even consider bringing up Pulju until he is absolutely dominating the AHL level.

I want to note that Nelonen has issued a removal of my Puljujarvi 2015-16 Liiga highlight package. That video is no longer available on YouTube.

That sounds fair because that video was the reason why I didn't buy their hockey-channel this season.
