RW Brock Boeser - North Dakota, NCAA (2015, 23rd, VAN) II

I don't see Wheeler at all. Wheeler is much bigger and a way better skater.

His upside is a 1st line sniping winger with physicality but not the greatest skating. Out of current NHLers, James Neal is probably closer than either Patches or Wheeler. Maybe he blows it out of the water and hits Perry like ceiling, but out of physical but not great skaters sniping wingers, I'd say it is more likely in Neal territory than Perry.

I think that's fair

I was thinking something similar. I think realistically, he can pull off roughly 20 goals, 20 assists next year.

That would be an extremely good rookie season for him, especially considering that only 3 Canucks are likely to break 40 points this year and 2 of them are named Sedin. 20 goals would be a feat as well, as the Canucks might only have one of those this year.

I honestly think 15 goals and 30 points would even be pretty solid on such a low scoring team. That would be right around fellow 2015 draft picks Zacha, Beauvillier, and Konecny, all guys who've had pretty good rookie seasons.

A lot of the scouts were comparing him to Patrick Sharp around the draft. He's not at all physical like Neal. And he certainly doesn't look 6' more like 5'10.

I've never been a big fan of the Sharp comparison just because Sharp's best attribute is probably his speed.

Agreed with the part about Neal, it's not a perfect comparison. Neal is bigger, stronger on his stick, and more physical. But I would think offensively their styles are similar. Maybe a few similarities with Oshie as well (just in terms of offensive style). Soft hands, quick release, good vision, deceptively shifty, but certainly not the fastest guy on the ice.

Agreed I was also going to say I don't think the Neal comparison is great and I disagree with the poster who suggested Boeser is physical. He isn't really a power forward type at all.

Also agree with you on Sharp. Sharp is a speedy guy. I always liked Michael Ryder as a comparison for Boeser but it's tough, there might not be a great comparison for him right now.

I believe Benning has compared his style to Joe Pavelski in the past.

He doesn't look small to me at all.

That's what I thought too. There is that famous video of him meeting Henrik sedin for the 1st time, shook his hands and he was almost eye to eye with henrik and he's 6'2.

I see Pavelski/Parise a little bit

I see it, but his bread and butter really isn't in the crease/netfront like those two guys. He'll go to those places, but he's more likely to try to find a soft spot near the faceoff dots to release his shot than crash the crease or look for deflections.

I watched him a lot at UND, and I'm actually not sure who a good comparison is. I thought about Hoffman for a while- respectable two way game and a lethal shot, but not particularly physical. I think we'll see him on the point/right side pp like Hoffman moving forward though.

Whatever the compairson is he's going to be a cornerstone piece for the franchise :yo:

Poor man's James Neal? Neal without malkin is a 30g 20a forward. Boeser has that potential. Poorman James Neal would mean his ceiling is like 20-20.

A normal mans James neal or patrick sharp are two great comparisons

Ryder is another player I was thinking of. Just didn't use it because he was notorious for being an extremely frustrating player.

Boeser played with physicality in the USHL and as a freshman. I haven't seen much of him this year, but usually nursing injuries all year can have an impact on someone's willingness to be proactive physically. I don't think he'll ever play with the nastiness of Neal, but there are similarities in their games. No comparison between players is ever perfect.

As for small? He's at the very least what would commonly be accepted as 6'1 in the NHL considering they round up. He measured 6 foot and half an inch at the combine. The thing is, he hasn't filled out like most young guys who play his type of game eventually do. He'll probably get to 205-210 in his mid-20's.

I wouldn't be surprised if he were 205-210 right now. His listing was 200 at UND this season and his NHL listing is out of date. The Canucks actually updated the height/weight listings for the entire roster this season at camp which was a pleasant surprise. Guys like Bo and Jake went from being listed 206lbs and 207lbs respectively to 223lbs and 229lbs. He doesn't play a light game and looks sturdy.

I'd hold back on the projections until we see him next year. Impossible to tell what he's about playing during a time when the games mean nothing.

Better 2 goals than 0 though

I've stood next to him in person (not on skates) and can confirm he's at least 6'0.

No, it would mean his expected level is that of a 20-20 guy. I think he'll end up between 40-55 points most seasons if things work out for him.

Neal had 31 goals and 58 points just last year . . .
