RW Brock Boeser - North Dakota, NCAA (2015, 23rd, VAN) II

Thought for sure he'd go 15 or 14. Wore 21 for USA also.

To be honest I'm not a huge fan of defense man numbers on forwards and Hall is the only recent player I've liked it with
Derek Dorsett currently wears #15; nobody is going to wear #14 until at least next season, as the departure of Alex Burrows is still raw.

Brock was assigned #42 at last summer's prospects camp, but Drew Shore wears that number.

This is why I hate retiring numbers. I've worn 19 my whole life because of the ones I've looked up to. If I were to play in the NHL, I would want to wear that number out of respect to those guys. Not be withheld from it because they wore it first.

Some other forwards with "defenceman" numbers:

I keep on forgetting that Derek Dorsett is on our team, please stop ruining my bliss.

I'd argue only

Bure, Sedins are worthy

Should only be HOF players who spent 6+ seasons of their prime with the team.

Bure right now with Luongo and the Sedins in the future.

Linden, Naslund should have been ring of honour

Haha they definately arent the only ones that get this treatment... Im sure u see this multiple times a day too with your team too!!!

There are a few Canadian teams that any type of positive roster transactions they make get crapped on by many people. How dare these teams look towards their future and do whats best!!

Oh look! Your responding to a leafs fan in a thread related to a Canuck prospect! See this all the time, now sure why.

Wonder what was behind him picking #6

Watch the clip of his dad announcing the starting line up. At the end he says something like: "Brock, did you know I used to have #6 in high school?"

I think he is doing it for his dad.

Spotted the guy who started watching in 2011.

I have watched both Linden and Naslund in their primes and there is no way these guys deserve their numbers retired. The problem is the team was desperate to retire its first number to bring a story to the franchise and they settled on Stan Smyl, who is the weakest retired number of all with a whopping 673 points, no cups, and no significant individual awards. So that's where the bar was set, and when Linden retired, he clearly had a bigger impact on the franchise than Smyl so they retired his with a whopping 867 points (733 with the Nucks) with no cups and no significant individual awards (unless you count the King Clancy). Naslund took over the franchise lead in points with 756 (869 in total) with one significant individual award (Lester B Pearson) but never having led the Canucks past the second round in the playoffs. In my opinion, none of the above accolades merit the "nobody can wear this jersey number ever again" tags. I think the bar should be set at Hall of Fame players who spent the majority of their prime with the Canucks. This would include Bure, with the potential to add the Sedins and Luongo in the next decade.

The retiring of number 12 in Vancouver really ticks me off! Stan Smyl was a decent player, but not even close to a player who's number gets thrown away for. What makes this worse is this number retirement set the bar so damn low.

Linden, Naslund should have been ring of honour

I agree 100%!! Linden, Naslund and Smyl should all be in the ring of honour, but not have their numbers thrown away. No, Luongo should not have his number retired either.

I'd also like to see someone player from Vancouver defy superstitious nonsense and take number 11! The number is not officially retired, nor should it be. It's unfortunate what happened to Wayne Maki. But that was in the 70's. Time to get over it already!

(PS: I HATE the practice of retiring numbers even under the best of circumstances. Especially numbers between 1 and 19. So I am biased on this issue)

In my opinion, Brock Boeser should be able to take number 16 in a perfect world.

Aside from scoring in his first game on that follow up .. How did Boeser look overall?

I was really really impressed. Not in that he drove play or was dominant in any fashion because he wasn't. I was impressed with the fact that he didn't look out of place at all. He showed incredible poise in that he totally played within himself, didn't try and do to much, and made the easy play when it was there. Then when he had a little time and space he showed off his offensive instincts. He had no problem keeping up it seemed and took a couple of bad passes in full stride and just kicked the puck up to his stick.

He skated well, which is really the key for him IMO. If he's skating well he's got the shot and instincts to make plays. I've noticed that he seems to have that extra jump in big games. I'll be very interested to see how he plays during his first full season - skating seems to be very hit or miss with him. When he's got his legs he has no problem keeping up and holding off defenders. But when he doesn't, he's slow and weaker on the puck.

Impressive debut considering the circumstances.

And let's consider he was probably physically and emotionally tired as hell. Returned with the team to Grand Forks after a 2 ot loss, then left for Minneapolis in the morning.
