I get sometimes fans can be unrealistic.

But for me at least, I have difficulty assigning Hyman greater value than Taylor Hall. It really appears, to me at least, that we are once again negotiating against ourselves. Would Hyman garner the same deal on the open market? I'm not certain he would.
I can understand your comparison because honestly when it comes down to it Hall is the better player over Hyman. Looking at our current team makeup though I wonder (and contracts aside) if Hyman's skillset is better for our team over Hall's. I think Hyman would be the better winger for McDavid over Hall. I also think Holland's plan is to try and get a winger for McDavid so we can go with Drai on the second line. I guess you could put Nuge with McDavid and if you got Hall put him with Drai but I prefer Nuge with Drai. I also think Hyman being able to pk and play infront of the net on the pp is a nice bonus.

As for value on the open market, people need to realize that their is the "open market" and the " Edmonton market". These are 2 different things and it has been like this for a very long time. For a longtime we have been on most players no trade lists for players that have them. We have either had to over pay or over extend players and most times both, just to come here. It also doesn't help when we seem to make an awesome trade to change us around something totally unexpected/unplanned happens and messes it all up, example Pronger.

The difference I see with this potential Hyman signing compared to the other past signings where it was an overpay or overextend is we are actually getting a player that can play in the position we are getting him for. How many times in the past did we overpay for a 5-6 dman expecting him to be our #2-3 or a 3 liner expected to handle being a 1st liner. We did it all the time.

Until we start becoming a team that consistently goes to the conference finals and hopefully the stanely cup finals and be a destination for players to want to go win we are probably going to have to overpay in someway to get free agents to come here.

Yep...doubt i'll bother post here anymore, just a constant barrage of toxic negative nonsense, if you dare post something thats not negative they pile pon you. This forum is toxic.

No one's "piling on you", you're the one jumping on anyone who dares to not drink the kool-aid and tow the company line and actually question things.

Can you name the teams that have won anything in this league with that philosophy?

I wouldn't do it and I don't think its a winning strategy. I'm just saying its better than signing Nikita Zaitsev to a 7 year 4.5 million dollar contract. That doesn't make it the right move - just makes it better than it could be. Trying to be positive year about a player that is awesome. Hoping for the best for you guys!

This is exactly what's going to happen.

Oh yeah, 100% that is what is going to happen. Hamilton is going to sign a 7 year x $7 M deal and people on here will LOSE THEIR MINDS that Holland didn't match the deal, lol. Completely forgetting that Hamilton has to choose to live here, and he already tried Calgary and didn't like it. Hamilton isn't coming to Edmonton people, just like Hall wasn't. Why are people talking about this even? Oh yeah, because Frank made a random one-liner in his blog in order to drive traffic to his site.

Stop replying to me thx. Not being constantly negative is not drinking koolaid, see thats the issue, it's one extreme to the other, you are toxic..there is a whole middle ground bud. You can both be critical, and not like some moves and not only post negative toxic post one after another after another like you and others do.

Top line winger Chris Kunitz was once the answer.

I'm just saying let's not roast the player before he's even here.

PIT never won a cup with Kunitz as top line winger, unless you count his rental season where he scored 1 goal in the playoffs as a top line winger. Funny how that works.

Also I'm roasting Holland, not Hyman.

It's done, Hyman wouldn't fly his family out like that if they were just in a negotiation phase.

It's the same thing when they flew Lucic and his family in to town and he signed a couple of days later.
It’s a done deal for sure.

Stop trying to edit people's opinions. People are allowed to have different opinions, just because they're not yours doesn't make them "toxic". People were upset at the Hall trade here at first, they were upset at the Reinhart trade.

And they were right to be. Deal with it.

When people are negative it's usually because they have been right more often than not here.

'We' need a player like Hyman … we can only wait and hope for the best when it comes to term and $, and if it works out long term. Fact is, until its announced we are only guessing at both, and until the contract has expired, we are only speculating on how it works out. I like the fact that 'we' poached (potentially poached at this point) a player from the Laughs (i.e. the center of the hockey universe).

I want more size on Draisaitl's line too … Nuge and Yam are too small/soft of a duo.

p.s. Love that the Hall talk has stopped … but who knows, maybe in 4 years. ;)

Lots of the same excuses everyone repeated constantly in the Lucic threads.

Forget years 7-8, the Oilers will regret this contract by year 3. And we're paying Toronto an asset for the privilege! Unbelievable stuff really.
I can't remember the last time one of these long term deals actually worked out.

Dude Seriously go whine about this somewhere else or cry or whatever. You’re making it absolutely idiotic in here

Just block me if you don't want to read it. I'm not leaving.

I'm going to continue to talk about how bad Holland is, and I will be proven right because this team is not winning anything with the way it's built right now.

I would literally beg for Hamilton to sign here and personally drive him to any museum in north America he wants, whenever he wants

Let's just hope he's not a big fan of libraries . . .

In addition to Edmonton, where a deal seems imminent (7x$5.5M or 8x$5.125M), the Panthers — who drafted Hyman — Rangers and the Bruins made credible offers ... Another team in rebuild-mode offered more, 6x$7M) ... Hyman’s preference: 1. Stay in Toronto ... 2. Play for a contender

I don't give a f*** what your opinion is, have it, if you love this move good for you.

But people who don't like this move can post too.

People who said the Reinhart trade was idiocy and the Hall trade was garbage were not "toxic". They were realistic.

If you're spending this much money term on a player "to win NOW!!!" it's fair to ask

1.) What have they actually won?

2.) What did they do in their most recent playoff appearances?

Do you want to answer those questions? Probably not.

Zach Hyman had the same number of goals in the last playoffs as Jhujar Khaira did.

This player had 0 goals in his first 21 playoff games...
You wouldn't want this guy, right?

You know who this guy is? Nik Ehlers. Ugh, who would want that guy?
Point being, it's kind of silly to judge a player based purely on playoff stats in a relatively small sample size.

I'll tell you one thing, I watched most of that Montreal-Toronto series and Hyman was one of their better forwards in that series. He was always creating scoring chances, just couldn't finish.
