Long term deals never end up well. But that's not the point. We are in a win now mode. 4-5 years to win it all. The remaining years don't matter
This contract has the potential of going sideways very, very quickly. It's good to know we've learned nothing from the Lucic contract.

This player had 0 goals in his first 21 playoff games...
You wouldn't want this guy, right?

You know who this guy is? Nik Ehlers. Ugh, who would want that guy?
Point being, it's kind of silly to judge a player based purely on playoff stats in a relatively small sample size.
He will come up with another example for his confirmation bias, wasting your breath.

Tatar has done nothing in the playoffs, hyman has done nothing in the playoffs.

Tatar has been much more impactful offensively in the reg season.

They are only a year apart or so in age.

Tatar is not going to cost a monster ultra risky contract and perhaps other assets.
Why not try and sign both?

There is no way I want Dougie Hamilton if the cost is going into next season with Smith/Stalock as our goaltending duo.
That we haven't heard anything about goalies we are interested in is very concerning.

If Smith is somehow in consideration for being the starter this season is a writeoff.

A lot of people worried about future cap issues rather than the current roster.

Yeah, because future cap issues are incredibly crippling and teams feel their effects much more quickly than 'the last few seasons.'

You would think people around here would have learned that by now.

He's not signing here anyway, Holland has no ability to actually negotiate a big boy contract, so you have nothing to worry about.

Maybe Brandon Montour? I think he has some offence. Jani Hakanpaa for a cheap pick up with some size and physicality.

The window to win is now..you are going to have to take a risk somewhere to get players here to make this team better.....

4-5 years? Source? It won't be a flat cap in 8 years lol, not even 5.

I mean, just Google flat NHL salary cap and you'll get around 20 different pieces, varying from a year ago up until a month ago.

The NHL has lost a significant amount of money. They've actually estimated in the $2.5B range. I know there is rumors Katz took a $60M USD haircut last year. I believe there is quite a bit of escrow payments due back to the owners, as they kind of bailed the players out in a sense over the pandemic.

It might not be "flat" in the literal sense. But it is very likely you could see it run completely flat for 3-4 years before slowly increasing.

The cap isn't expected to budge for 4-5 years. So, I'm not sure where you are getting this from?
its actually the opposite, with the new US TV deals the caps should be expected to rise at least 4-6% starting the year after next

seriously, GMKH needs to put all his energy and pull to get Dougie to come here. get Connor to give him a call, get Messier, get him his favorite childhood blankie which he thought he'd lost in a house fire. we should have gotten him from Boston when Flames originally got him but Sweeney didn't want to deal with ex-GM Chiarelli. Can't let him slip again
