They're not willing to mortage futures. When have they EVER traded a 1st round pick to help the team?

They're not willing to do that. They're willing to sit on that shit forever but make stupid overpayments in free agency and/or lose trades.

That's their philosophy, the "it's the price You havE to PAy!" philosophy.

I see the Oilers reluctance to deal first round picks a direct result of the inability to draft outside of the first round, except for a couple d men, one of which we just traded away in Jones.

So, overpaying for free agents it is.

It could be a 20yr deal for Hyman and I wouldn't care.

The only thing that matters is a low cap hit and the ability to buy him out in the later years or make him extremely cheap to trade away

Agents aren't stupid, contracts are structured now to make them hard to buy out for that exact reason, Hyman's agent knows damn well the Oilers will try to buy his client out at some point, it's his job to make a contract that makes that as difficult as possible.

That's why you pay an agent to look after details like that.

The thing with Hyman is he's a versatile player, so even if his offense drops off he could still play a bottom 6 defensive role, albeit while overpaid. He isn't a top 6 or bust guy though, so it helps a little.

The cap hit isn't low though. That's his normal cap hit in a 4 year contract scenario.

It's done, Hyman wouldn't fly his family out like that if they were just in a negotiation phase.

It's the same thing when they flew Lucic and his family in to town and he signed a couple of days later.
Demers flew out to and didn't sign

Yeah, banking on Hyman and Nuge on the third line in years 4/5 of their contracts and by then the cap will expand so the money won't look so bad.

But he didn't bring his family as I recall. Lucic came with the full family in tow because wifey needed to look at neighbourhoods to move into.

If you're bringing the wife, it's for that reason.

What exactly are the Oilers "winning now"?

Do the Oilers even beat Winnipeg with Hyman? How many goals did he score in the Montreal series for Toronto?

Uh, what?

Is Hyman the solution in a vacuum? No. But if other moves are made to shore up the bottom 6 and the D then, well, maybe.

The fact is we have to "win now". We cannot wait. We have 3 years, MAX to show some serious movement, and what I mean by that is as a minimum, a conference finals appearance.

Although I'm by no means a fan of Hyman's prospective contract, the fact is we have to do SOMETHING. There's no guarantee that if we pass on Hyman that we're able to attract a Saad or a Tatar come the 28th. There's a real chance we'd be forced to throw a rookie beside McDavid and hope it works.

At this point, we have a player that's keen to come to Edmonton and is an improvement on what we have. Are we paying through the nose? Absolutely. But the level of security he can bring to the team's offseason could be quite valuable.

Cap in 7 8 years will be quite higher.....this is not that bad a contract, the team is better, deeper...and still more moves to come...it's time to go in.

If you're spending this much money term on a player "to win NOW!!!" it's fair to ask

1.) What have they actually won?

2.) What did they do in their most recent playoff appearances?

Do you want to answer those questions? Probably not.

Zach Hyman had the same number of goals in the last playoffs as Jhujar Khaira did.

Our only hopes are we trade assets later to get rid of him or the cap rises enough (and he sustains play long enough) that 5 million on the third line isn't too much.
